Cassandra Walton rose early the next morning but never left her bed. She sat up in bed , against her lilac scented pillows, her white leather bound engraved with her and Malcolm's names wedding album open on her blanket covered lap. Her lined hands gently stroked the large black and white picture of a young smiling bride in a white lace dress being picked up and kissed by a handsome young man. Till death us part , she thought wryly. But she hadn't been ready yet. Not yet. She had been having too much fun with the man she adored.
Theodore Walton - Fisher also rose early. He took care not to wake his husband or son. He slipped into his thick dark blue robe and matching slippers. He was about to perform an errand that was painful for him but not one he wanted his mother doing by herself. Since it was already Tuesday there wouldn't be much time before the funeral on Saturday especially if they were going back home the next day.
He crept down the stairs. He felt like a old, old, old man. He moved towards his father's study where he proceeded to pack up his father's belongings.
His books on history and flowers and classic cars.
His old family pictures.
His battered but beloved old pipe which Theo slipped into his own pocket with a serene smile on his face.
But when he opened the top desk drawer and saw what was in it his smile slipped away. It was a small box of half eaten chocolate chip cookies. With an attached note. A note that was typed and supposedly from Theo himself. Except he had never sent his father food recently. He pulled out his phone from his other pocket and dialed a number he never thought he would be.
" Yeah," came the still sleepy voice of Sheriff Deputy Ryan Livingston.
" Ryan? Sorry to wake you so early. This is Theo. I need a favor. Can you get an autopsy with a tox screen done on my father? My mother gives permission. And could you get something tested for me? It's important. "
" Yes to both. I'll talk to Doc Sams , the ME. Try to get it on priority with the funeral coming up. What else you want tested? "
Theo used a tissue to open the box and drew out one cookie. He held it up to the light , saying , " It appears to be cookies. "
