I have done some thinking, researching, and investigating. There seem to be a few key features in those that chose to research Slenderman and the creepypasta, which also align with the known proxies. Here are some, which I believe can be hints if you might be chosen, or are just prominent in researchers/proxies.

--

- Mentally ill: It's no secret that the proxies are mentally ill. But, it also seems to be that the majority of researchers are too. It makes sense - normal people wouldn't research, believe, or even devote themselves to this type of stuff.

- Antisocial / Introverts (+ Creative & Intelligent): A lack of friends and loved ones, or few of them, makes it easier to isolate you, which Slenderman tends to do a lot. As well, people like this tend to be more creative and intelligent. Creativity and intelligence is key for researchers and proxies - you would hit a lot of dead-ends and plateaus otherwise, but with these traits it's easier to find ways to work around it.

- Highly Imaginative: A lot of the same reasons as being creative and Imaginative, but those that are highly imaginative also tend to see and hear the creepypasta more often. It could just be their minds playing tricks on them, but Slenderman does seem to target them more than less imaginative people.

- Unstable families / home lives: It usually leads to mental illness, which I already explained, and desperation to leave and/or escape. Those desperate to leave their families and homes are easier to be manipulated, and are more willing to do dirty work in exchange for freedom.

- Manipulative: This also kinda has the same reasons as being creative and intelligent. It's easier to work around dead ends if you know how to please people or what to say to them to get more information. But, also it plays a bit into mental illness, and we already know the mentally ill are highly targeted.

- Good with psychology: It's kind of the same as being manipulative, as it helps work around dead ends and get more information. But, if you know psychology, it's easier to know when a story/information is true or faked.

It's safe to say I meet a lot of those, as well as a few others I know. Though, please don't take this as a defintive list - some things can be just coincidences, or might not guarantee that you are chosen. Take this with a grain of salt, it's just what I've noticed so far.
