May's POV

I was frozen onstage with the whole town staring at me. I had experienced stage fright before, but this was a whole new level. I can't believe this is happening. How could I not have realized that Ariana was eavesdropping on my conversation with Calum?

My eyes scanned the crowd, searching for a comforting face in the sea of critical ones. I looked for Calum, but he was nowhere to be seen.

As I looked for Michael, my eyes fell on Ashton. He was looking around with a look of pure disgust and anger on his face. Our eyes met and I couldn't take it anymore. I forced my legs to take me off the stage and away from this awful place.

I ran onto the beach and kept going until I fell down and started crying even harder. My brain caught up with me and the thoughts came rushing in.

I couldn't bear the look he was giving me. It was like he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. To him I'm probably just another pathetic girl in this town who had a crush on him.

My sobs started catching in my throat as I found it harder and harder to breathe. I clutched at the sand, trying to find something to calm me down. I need to get back home. I stood back up on my shaky legs and kept running, even though I kept tripping on the hilly sand every few steps.

"May!" Ashton's voice called from a distance. I ran faster.

Ashton's POV

It took me a few seconds for me to snap back into reality. Now I'm running after her down the beach.

I have to just grow some balls and tell her how I feel. No doubt by now she's thoroughly embarrassed so I shouldn't be afraid to embarrass myself a little too in order to fix things.

"May!" I shouted and I'm not sure if she heard me. She started running towards her house and I repeated her name. She looked back and I could see she was crying. She turned back around and started running even faster.

Dammit she runs so fast! I need to get in shape. FOCUS ASHTON.

"May, please stop!" I yell again. "May!"

She wouldn't stop. I kept chasing her until we got to her front porch.

"Maylin!" I shouted as a last resort.

It worked and she turned around. "What?" she mumbled, refusing to make eye contact with me.

"Will you please look at me?"

She took a deep breath and wiped her eyes, finally looking up. "Look Ashton, I'm a-already embarrassed enough. Will you p-please just leave me alone?" she stuttered, trying to contain her sobs.

"No, that's not what I-"

"Stop, please. Look I don't need you m-mocking me too. Please, just- just go," she sniffed.

"Listen, May-"

"No, Ashton! You said you just want to be friends. It doesn't matter how I feel. You're not helping, just leave." She turned around and started unlocking her door.

"Ok, I will." I turned around to leave.

No, I'm not letting this happen again. "You know what, screw this."

I grabbed her arm and spun her around. "I'm not letting you get away again." I brought my hands up to her cheeks, kissing her.

I held my lips against hers for a few seconds, trying to express all my emotion, all those feelings I had tried to stuff down, through the kiss.

She didn't respond so I pulled away, scanning her face for any sign that what I did was right. Her expression was unreadable, and my heart sunk knowing that I was the one who caused all of this, who made her feel so confused and worthless. All the trouble she's gone through this summer is because of me.

I turned to leave, thinking she might just need some time alone.

"Wait." She said quietly, reaching out to touch my arm and bring me back to her.

"I'm so so-"

"Shut up," she complained and grabbed my face, kissing me. I was startled at first, but then my instincts took over. We stood on her porch for a couple minutes until she pushed me away, crossing her arms.

"Now explain yourself, Irwin."

"Like I was saying before you so rudely interrupted me, not that I'm complaining," I chucked and she smirked, "I'm so sorry I'm such an idiot I don't just wanna be friends I want to be more. I want to get to know you better and take you out on dates and I don't want things to be weird between us because of all the things that have happened. I'm sorry for all the problems you've had to deal with because of me and I know most of it's my fault-"

"True."

I grinned sheepishly. "Bottom line is, I acted like a total ass to you and I'm sorry, did I say that already? Um, I should probably stop talking before I say something stupid and ruin everything again."

"You're probably right," She grinned.

"Hey, watch it!" I pouted.

"So?"

"So, what?"

"I believe there was a date mentioned somewhere in that speech? Was I wrong, or..."

"No, no you're right! See you tomorrow at 8." I leaned down and kissed her quickly before running down the steps.

"How dare you!" I heard May shout from the porch. "I'm getting you back for that, Irwin!"

"We'll see!" I shouted back, turning around and running backwards so I could see her.

"Okay text me!" She yelled and then turned back to go into the house.
