CARMEN

I stood in the shower, feeling the hot water pour over me, as I quickly ran soap over my body, and washed my hair.

It was time for another dreaded day at work.

I'd overslept, and I was already running a little late.

Working in a corporate environment, I always had to look the part, cake my face in a shit-ton of make-up, and dress the part, so I couldn't come in without putting an effort in, as much as I wanted to rush and bolt out of my apartment as quickly as possible.

It was the amount of pressure at work, forcing us to maintain a professional image, because we never knew when a potential investor was going to come in, and we'd have to sit down for a meeting to convince them to sign over a shit-ton of money.

Lately, my entire routine had just been going to work, my boss having me do a shit-ton of overtime I didn't sign up for, and then coming home, and I barely got to spend any time with my husband, Daniel.

I was the breadwinner out of us both, at the moment.

I'd got my big-time business executive job, at the firm of my dreams, after working and studying countless hours to get here.

Neither me nor Daniel had been born into riches.

It was actually the opposite.

We'd been born into poverty, and had to work our way up to create a better life for ourselves.

He'd been my boyfriend since high-school.

Daniel hadn't gone to university like I had, because his mother had fallen ill at the time, so he'd dropped out of his education in order to take care of her.

Recently, his mother had recovered, and lived separately with one of his cousins who took care of her.

But now, Daniel couldn't find a proper job, because of his lack of qualifications and skills, and lack of work experience, to get any job in a reputable industry.
