I stand right outside Bay's door a couple days later. I decide whether or not I should knock, because, after all, it's still very early in the morning. I haven't gotten the chance to talk to her for a while thanks to my busy schedule so I go ahead and knock anyways, hoping she'll wake up. I hear shuffling from inside and finally the door opens to reveal Bay in an oversized t-shirt, a messy bun and, hopefully because it's not visible, a pair of shorts.
She rubs her eyes in confusion. "Baekhyun?" she whispers, unsure.
I smile a wide smile. "Morning, sleepyhead," I rub her head. "Change quickly, okay? Let's go on a date."
She seems surprised. She arches her eyebrows and looks at me cautiously.
"What's the occasion? Are you kicking me out?" she questions.
I just laugh and shake my head. "Hurry hurry," I turn her around and give her a slight nudge, closing the door behind her.
Within five minutes, she gets herself cleaned up and we leave the dorms for a short breakfast date. We end up going to a small coffee shop around the corner since mostly people from the company eat there. Plus, it is still seven in the morning so not many people are out yet. "Like coffee?" I ask Bay.
"Never tried it," she says, intrigued by the variety of little cakes they have behind the glass.
"Then I'll get a coffee," I tell the barrister. "You can try mine," I turn back to Bay.
"I want that," she says, completely ignoring me, pointing at a big strawberry cupcake with an excited look on her face.
We get a table in the very far corner of the shop and she gets to work on her cake. I push my cup of coffee towards her. "Here, try it."
She takes a uncertain sip of it and furrows her eyebrows. "So?" I ask. "What do you think?" She doesn't respond. Instead, she slowly and calmly takes the container of sugar from the side of the table and swiftly dumps a good serving of diabetes into my cup. I didn't have time to respond before she brings the cup to her lips again and takes another sip. "So?" I ask again, laughing on the inside about how funny her actions are. Once again, Bay says nothing. Instead, she smiles and nods.
"Good?" I laugh, on the verge of tearing up.
"Now it is," she declares, pushing the cup back to me.
I push it back. "Oh no, no. It's yours now girl," I shake my head, scrunching my nose in disgust. I refuse to drink liquid diabetes.
She pokes at her cake. "So why are we doing this, Baekhyun?" she looks at me suspiciously, questioning my true intentions.
I consider my wording for a while and decide to just bluntly come out with it. "You're hiding something," I say straightforwardly. "What is it?"
Bay seems surprised at first, then extremely hesitant. She looks away, as if she's afraid to meet my eyes. So she is keeping something from me. Betrayal starts to overcome me and I can't help but feel bitter that she refuses to depend on me, even now. Am I not the person she clings to anymore? Does she still not trust me? Without realizing it, my fists ball up but Bay seems to notice.
Her eyes widen in fear. "I'm sorry," she apologizes quickly and gets up briskly, accidentally knocking her chair over. She looks apologetic, but terrified, and runs out of the café without looking back at me before I can even calm her down. I curse under my breath, not expecting things to turn out this way. I throw some bills on the table and run after her. I look around, unable to spot her silhouette anywhere.
I had forgotten that she runs faster than anyone I know. Fuck. I pull out my phone from my back pocket and punch in Chanyeol's number. "Huh, B- Baek-?" he mumbles in the phone, obviously waking up from a deep slumber.
"It's Bay!" I half-shout. That wakes him up.
"What? What happened?" he asks, completely and utterly awake and focused. "Where is she?"
"I have no fucking idea. She got scared. She's scared," I blubber into the phone. "Just get dressed. We need to look for her."
"I'll stay home first," he says calmly. "To see if she comes back. I'll come with you in say thirty minutes?"
I agree and begin looking around the area. In the park. By the riverside. Even outside the company. Nothing. I still don't understand how she could've been so scared. She didn't strike me as a delicate girl. No. I've been with her for many months now. She isn't a delicate girl; I know that for sure. Then what in the world is going on inside her head right now? After a while of frantic searching, Chanyeol meets me outside of the dorms and we begin our trek towards the parks near us. We approach the smack middle of the plaza and stop walking when we notice something very, very unusual.
The bark at the lower part of a big tree is completely stripped off. Two benches that are right next to each other are completely demolished. The cemented pavements are cracked and jagged. And in the middle of it all is Bay, sitting in fetal position, covering her head with her arms.
