About two months have passed by. No, I haven't moved to Ruth's yet, though it is on my list. She's been staying at my house though, and she regularly visits Zoey but I just can't seem to let her go. I'm about to finish my residency, I've take all of my exams and am waiting for my results. Which is crazy. I've done a five-year course in two months. And I'm about to have a meeting with the Chief about my speciality. Today. I'm excited. I haven't told anyone what I'm choosing.
I feel the intense stares of all of the interns. It also never occurred to me that I'd have different coloured scrubs soon. Well, I'd have to train in my speciality for a bit but then I'd switch my light blue scrubs for dark blue ones.
I make my way up to the top floor, the Boss floor. I was told to meet the Chief at ten a.m, sharp. So I'm making my way up at five-to-ten, just to be sure. I walk up to the office door, straighten my lab coat and scrubs before knocking.
"Yay! Come in, Doctor Bedi!" I heard the Chief cheer.
I walked through the door and see the Chief sat on her chair with a pale, dark haired woman sat next to her.
"Good morning, Chief. How are you?" I beam at her and she beams back.
"I'm fine, thank you. I've pulled my back out and the wife's worried I'll walk around stuff. Hence why I couldn't answer the door. How are you?"
"I'm great."
"Ruth's really proud of you, you know?" she smirks at me.
"Is she? That's sweet." I say as I take a seat in front of her desk.
"Business. Business. Business." the Chief chanted, "Are we excited?"
"Yes. So excited."
"So, let's get into it. Your results." she said, "Sweetheart, can you pass me that envelope over there, please?" she spoke softly to her wife. Mrs Chief, that's what I'm gonna call her, hands be a brown envelope with my name on it.
I open it and take my results out. My heart was beating so hard out of my chest. I looked through the results and see that I passed, one hundred percent. My face must've had a big smile because when I looked up, the Chief and her wife were looking at me with really big smiles too.
"I passed." I gasp.
"You did."
"Wow."
The Chief let me have my moment for a bit. Just basking in my pride and relief.
"So, Doctor Bedi. What speciality are you choosing?" the Chief asked.
"Paediatrics." I say confidently.
"Really? You struck me as a Cardio surgeon. This is the first time I've been wrong." she raised her brows, "Let's get you sorted then."
---------
"Hey," Ruth greeted me by her car.
"Hi, how was your day?"
"It was fine. Had some pretty nasty traumas come in today, I was glad when you came into the surgery with me. You're really skilled. How about you?" she explained, unlocking the car and we both got in.
"Well, my day was great. I kicked butt, took names and saved lives. Oh, and I chose my speciality."
"Oh yeah?" Ruth questioned as she backed out of the spot.
"Yeah. Would you be upset if I didn't choose peds?"
"Honestly?" she said, putting the car into first gear and driving out of the parking lot, "No, not really. Not many people choose peds in this hospital. I have a feeling it's me."
"No, it's not you. I think what people go for is the status or the amount of people working there already. They might feel like there'd be too much pressure in peds because there's only two doctors."
"Yeah, I guess." she said as she continued driving. I watched it click in her head then, "Did you just say two doctors in peds?"
"Yeah." I nod.
"You chose peds?" she asked, I could feel her hype radiating off of her.
"I did." I smile at her.
"Oh my God. I cannot wait to go home. You're gonna get the fattest hug you've ever received." she stated, "I'm so happy. What made you choose peds?"
"I like working with kids. And I feel like I'm really good with them."
"Yeah, I loved seeing you and that girl a few days ago, Grace, that was so heart-warming."
"Thanks." I say as we pulled into the driveway.
Before I could get to the front door, I felt Ruth pick me up from behind and spin me around. When she put me down, I turned in her arms and she hugged me tightly, "Welcome to the team." she said, then she kissed my head, "Your hair smells great."
We pulled away and I could see the happiness in her eyes, "You're really happy about this, huh?"
"Yes!" she said, "Now let me inside, I'm tired and hungry. It's getting chilly out here."
"Fall is upon us." I say, letting us into the house. I smelled food immediately upon entry and I heard Ruth's stomach growl as she slipped her shoes off.
"Tammy, Ruth? That you?" Mom called.
"Yeah." I call back, sitting on the couch. Ruth sat next to me and leaned her head on my shoulder. I rest my head on hers and placed my hand on her knee.
"Aw, look at you two. So cute." Mom cooed.
"Ruth's really happy." I tell Mom.
"Why's that?"
"I chose peds."
"Wow! That's so wonderful, honey! I've got your special celebratory dinner ready. It's all on the table. And Ruth, you better eat until-"
"I can't anymore." Ruth finished.
"Good girl. Come! Let's eat!"
"I'm starving." Ruth groaned as she got up.
"Me too, babe." I chuckle. Long days at work call for big meals.
Mom had a whole entire buffet of Indian food on the table and Ruth basically came at the sight of it. She sat down in her usual spot and Dad had her plate fixed already. She thanked him and waited for everyone else to get their food before starting her own.
I told my family about my career choice and they were happy, Ruth celebrated again... Then we just spoke about family things.
My parents were asking me about me moving out and Ruth decided that I would move in with her very soon. By soon, we mean I'm going to start packing tomorrow. Mom's happy with my cooking skills and she wants to take a look around Ruth's house as well. She also wants to go shopping for Ruth after she admitted that her cupboards her bare and at this point, Ruth has learned to accept it.
"I'll put your name on the insurance if you want." Ruth suggested as she took a huge bite of tikka masala on a bit of peshwari naan. So hot.
"Yeah, okay. I'll help pay some of the bills too, since I'm actually earning now."
"Don't you worry about that." Ruth dismissed.
"I have to do something." I place a hand on her arm.
"Your Mom's forcing you to cook for me. That's enough."
"Ruth." I groan. "Let me pay for something."
"Well, I've noticed you've been enjoying my Disney+ account."
"Yeah, I like watching Modern Family, don't judge."
"I'm not. I'm just saying that if you wanna pay for something then you can pay for my Disney+."
"Deal. I'll pay for your Netflix too."
"Tammy-"
"Deal! What's that, Ruth? You agree? That's wonderful." I tease her.
"Fine." she huffed, "Deal."
She was offered the last bit of Tandoori and she took it immediately. She really likes the Tandoori.
