Nick waved his hand around in the air, clearly frustrated. He leaned forwards on the couch and looked at his palm. "I have no idea what's going on." He made a fist, shadow blades exploding out of his knuckles. He touched on the blades and brought his hand back suddenly. "Sharp. It's sharp. I can make these blades with no problem, but I couldn't pick that lock, I couldn't get the key to solidify."

Breck wiped the ressil off his hands and shook his head. "You're going to drive yourself mad." He scooped up the leafy, thin vegetable and put it in a bowl. "You're not going to be perfect at everything, you just got your powers."

Nick sighed and leaned back on the couch. "But we have no time to waste. I can't use that as an excuse. I have to get good at shadow casting, and I have to get good at it fast."

"Well, how about tonight you focus on relaxing and having dinner with your gorgeous soulmate?" Breck walked out of the kitchen and into the common space. He held his arms out to the side. "How does that sound?"

Nick laughed. "Sounds pretty good, Breck. Pretty good. But--"

"You won't get better at shadow casting by working yourself sick." Breck sat down next to Nick and covered the smaller man's hand. "You need to take some time, you need to rest. Since The Golden Spire came to Sesstria, I don't think you've breathed."

"It's all I can think about."

"That's not healthy, Nick." Breck squeezed his hand. He knew the effect that it had on Nick. From beside him, he visibly calmed, his shoulders lowered, his breathing slowed. "Just relax tonight, ok? Focus on dinner, and try not to think about the siege."

Nick 's beautiful, brown eyes glowed in the golden sunlight that was pouring in through the windows of The Paxtan Estate. "Alright." He nodded. "Alright. You win. I'll stop practicing."

Breck smiled, and then he leaned in and kissed Nick. He stayed close to his soulmate's face, not pulling away completely. "Good." He tapped him on the cheek. "Let's get going, then, yeah? I'm baking some oolo bread."

Oolo bread was a Paxtan recipe that his parents had taught him and his brother. There was nothing like it. After tasting it, he had never been satisfied with any other kind of bread, they didn't have the same spark.

Breck leaned down and checked on them, slowly baking over the burning coals. He could see them rising, slowly inflating.

"Do you need me to do anything," Nick said, following Breck and leaning on the kitchen counter.

Breck shook his head. "Just need you to stand there and look pretty." He turned to Nick and winked. "So far, you're doing pretty good."

Nick's cheeks went red. "Shut up."

After moving in together, Breck had learned quickly that Nick didn't know how to cook. He could do the basic things, sure. He could use the utensils, he could cut the food, but he couldn't do much else. Nick had explained to Breck that it was because he had been used to some modern amenities that they didn't have in Sesstria. And Sally had usually taken care of the dinners back in his own world. Whatever it was, Breck was happy to do the cooking. He had no problem feeding his soulmate.

Breck mixed in a dash of qew into the bowl.

With a rush of cold air, the front door to the estate opened and Vinton and Chris walked in. They were laughing. Vinton pushed Chris to the side, jokingly, and then brought him close and rubbed his short, blonde hair playfully.

"I can't believe you did that, deelo." Vinton tapped his soulmate on the shoulder. "The Defenders should pay you for that, they should give you a medal."
