"Jeeze." Adam looked up at the giant crystal which lorded over The Altar. "What is it?"
"A piece of The Goddess." Breck put his hands on his hips as he admired it. "Or, at least, that's what the siphons say. Nobody knows how a chunk of The Goddess could've fallen off of her."
Adam took a step closer, eyes fixed on the magnificent jewel. "Man, i'm going to kill Landel. How has he never brought me here before?"
"It's a sacred place, used for confirmations and private worship of The Goddess. I'm surprised you haven't been here yet, but it's not a great... date location."
"Still..."
Breck turned to the side, and gestured to the long, cushioned bench next to them. "Wanna take a seat?"
"Sure." Adam slipped onto the bench, leaned back against the fabric. "This is a lot more comfortable than our churches at home." He ran his hand along the cushions. "They make us sit on hard wood there. No plush for the sinners."
Adam smiled, as though he had just made a joke. But there were a few words in there that hadn't made any sense. Breck didn't pry. He knew the basics, so he smiled back. Besides, his mind was already racing, trying to think of how he was going to phrase this.
Breck lowered himself into the spot next to Adam and breathed out.
"So..." Adam looked at him. "I mean, this place is pretty cool, Breck, but why did you ask to meet me here?"
How to say it? How to put it to words? There were some layers to this, complications that wouldn't have been present if the man he had been seeking permission to be confirmed with wasn't an outsider. Nick already had a partner, Adam's mom, and Breck knew that Adam would be conflicted about what Breck was about to say, about to ask.
"I guess I should start by saying that I'm not, obviously, ever going to replace your mom."
Adam's smile disappeared. He turned forwards, looking away from Breck. "Uhh, alright."
Goddess, he was starting this all wrong. "What I mean to say is that I understand that Nick and your mom are married, and i'm not trying to interfere with that in any way."
"Breck, we've talked about this, right? Remember? You two got back from The Spread, I learned that you and dad had found... love on that trip, and I learned to be ok with that. I mean, I don't... hate it, but I don't think i'm ever going to love it. It just is what it is. This place has changed us, I know that, and I don't know --"
"This isn't about that, Adam. This is something more."
He looked at Breck again, smile still gone, brow narrowing. "More?"
And Breck was back at where he had started, not knowing how to say this. A siphon walked by, robes dragging along the polished, stone floor. He watched the man pass, breathed out, and tried to continue.
"You know what a confirmation is, right?"
"I've heard of them."
"Two people apply to be seen as soulmates in the eyes of The Goddess. It's only through confirmation that two people are given the right to attend to The Goddess for the purposes of creating a child together."
Adam blinked at Breck. "Yeah. Alright."
"Well, you know that your dad and I have been... seeing eachother for a while now."
"A few months. Yes." There was a discomfort in Adam's voice.
Breck's stomach twisted. "We're happy." He leaned forwards onto his knees, nodding. "We're very happy together. I... I couldn't imagine my life without your dad."
