Breck and Vinton walked through The Commerce, slipping around slightly-charred brick walls, charting their way through busy thoroughfares. Their destination was obvious, but neither of them spoke about it.
Breck was trying to spend as much time with his nephew as he could. When Drappel came, Breck's time would be limited, and finding space for Vinton would be much harder. So, he needed to take advantage of the time that he had, when he had it.
"Almost back to normal, i'd say." Vinton ran his hands over a stone wall. "It's crazy how quickly that can happen after something so insane."
"Sesstrians are resilient." Breck smiled. He looked at the people around them, who were living, thriving, despite everything. "That's who we are. We've been through worse, and we've managed to adjust, to get things back to normal." They walked past The Goddess's Tile, which was just beginning to open for the day. Already, men were waiting to be admitted. "The Golden Spire will barely be a footnote to history."
"I hope you're right, because, well, if you're not, that means they won."
"They're not going to win, not while i'm still alive."
As they continued to walk through the district, weaving their way through thin streets and small squares, Breck saw the truth in Vinton's statement. The city was, mostly, back to normal. Construction had begun on the block that had been destroyed by the flaming ball. Those buildings were rising from the ashes of charred wood and burnt stone. A sense of safety was returning to the city, which had been lacking for quite some time.
"Listen, Vinton, i've been meaning to tell you about something."
"What is it?" Vinton asked.
Breck was oddly nervous to say it. "Nick and I were talking about what we're going to name our first child." He breathed. How would Vinton feel about this? "I... I suggested Drappel."
Vinton stopped walking. Breck turned to his nephew, half-expecting anger or frustration. Instead, Vinton looked shocked.
"Drappel?"
Breck nodded. "Nick agreed. He thinks it's a great name."
Breck hadn't been sure what to expect, but, as he watched his nephew, he saw the young man's face change. Vinton's upper lip began to quiver, his eyes went wet. "I love it. I... I love it."
"I wanted to make sure that it was alright with you."
"Are you joking, Breck?" Vinton lunged forward and wrapped his uncle in a tight hug. "It's perfect. I'm sure dad would be honoured."
Breck hugged his nephew back, tears beginning to sting his own eyes. "I think so, too."
Vinton rubbed his face as he pulled away. "Goddess, I'm so happy for you."
"Thanks."
"Have you and Nick been getting everything ready for him?"
They had.
It had been three days since their return from The Goddess. The first thing that they had done was to make sure the yvwsa was setup in their room. It was a strange, little contraption. It had four posts that kept it steady, and criss-crossing, above the ground, were a series of flexible wires and ropes. In the middle of the four posts, suspended above the ground by those same wires, was a small pouch for the crystal to go inside. Apparently, it was designed to grow as the child grew. Ideally, they would only need one yvwsa. Breck did not want to spend another endless day trying to figure out how to put the thing together. Nick had worked in construction back in his own world, and, yet, he had been just as dumbfounded.
