The months passed.
Breck had been so happy, so excited when he had seen that little jewel in Nick's stomach. He was finally getting the family, the future, that he wanted, and it couldn't have been more perfect. And, as the time passed, as they days turned to months, as their child continued to grow, the crystal turning light red and then slightly pink, that feeling never faded.
Nick and Breck spent their days together, watching their son, noting his progress. Breck was lost in the beautiful fog of an intense domestic bliss. Life was an endless dream. They spoke with Medic Weel, constantly, and he gave them tips on how to care for their son.
Eventually, when their child's crystal had grown to the size of two fists, they were given a portable carrier and advised to take their son out for walks.
So, Breck strapped the crystal to the front of his chest and took him for walks. Nick was always by his side, and they got countless smiles and nods as they wandered through the friendly, calm streets of Sesstria. They did that multiple times a day, as Medic Weel had told them that direct sunlight was good for the baby.
For Breck, time was measured not in minutes, or days, or hours, but in how big their son was getting. A few weeks after their child first came forward, the crystal turned slightly pink and they could both see a dark figure suspended within, getting bigger. When Breck put a hand to the crystal, it vibrated. When he put an ear to it, he could hear the beat of his son's little heart. He was so insanely excited. There was no precedence for the feeling, it was completely new, an overwhelming joy.
A few weeks later, suddenly, Lord Djaro's visit came to an end. There was a hasty ceremony thrown together, and most of the city was invited to attend.
The Paxtans left on a cloudy, windy day that held the promise of rain. There was a long, tedious procession for their departure. Nick and Breck attended. As always, Breck had their child strapped to his chest.
They stood at the edge of the Palace's moat, where Hilltown began to snake down towards The Square. A few dozen men, dressed in colourful shirts and white pants, were all that remained of Prince Djaro's guard. Rafie stood beside the Prince, of course. There was a grim cast to the ceremony, dour looks on the Paxtan faces. Breck didn't know what to make of that.
Around Breck and Nick, there were many Sesstrians gathered to watch Prince Djaro leave. Mark was among them, sighing in the chill air. King Esteck, standing on a raised, wooden platform, was flanked by Landel and Adam
The King made a long speech about the importance of the Sesstrian and Paxtan alliance, and commented on how wonderful it had been to have Djaro in their city for the past several months, and how he hoped that the recent events would impress upon him how grave the threat of The Golden Spire was.
Prince Djaro seemed oddly muted through the whole thing. Normally, the man was all smiles and warmth, boisterous laughter and inappropriate comments. As he listed to Esteck speak, though, his expression was dark, thunderous as the clouds above. His eyes kept shifting to Mark, his scowl deepening.
Regardless, once the speech was finished, the few dozen Paxtans departed Sesstria in a parade of colour and ceremony, marching their way down to the southern gate and then heading east along Sesstria's main thoroughfare. Breck would miss them, he had enjoyed their company.
A few days after that, when the crystal was big enough to cover most of Breck's chest, Nick and him stopped for lunch at The Palace.
After their morning walk, Nick and Breck travelled up the main street in Hilltown. The city was busy, the people of Sesstria enjoying the bright, clear day. As always, people's eyes were drawn to the crystal on Breck's chest and, usually, their faces lit up with smiles, some of them offering congratulations.
