After that night at Hullit's Lake, Nick's life was turned upside down. Before, nothing had been officially tying him to his new world. He had been working as a defender, sure, and he had been living with Breck, but there had been nothing concrete. Now, though, that was different. He had agreed to marry his soulmate, he had agreed to proclaim their love in front of the entire city.
And Nick was excited, so fucking excited.
The next two weeks were full of planning and preparation. They had to book the time at The Altar, they had to make arrangements to have s Syphon confirm them, they had to make sure there would be food and drink at the multa afterwards, they had to buy a cart for their confirmation gifts.
But, throughout all of this preparation, Nick felt oddly reluctant to talk to his son about it. Breck understood, he always did. He agreed that they would wait until Nick told Adam before they told anybody else that was close to them. But, when they got closer to the date of the confirmation, which was set to happen in a few days, Nick knew that he couldn't put it off any longer. He needed to tell him.
On a clear, warm morning, after breakfast, Nick asked Adam if he had a few spare minutes. Adam said that he did, but he had an expectant look on his face, as though he knew what was coming. Breck gave him a warm smile as Nick and Adam walked away from the dining hall.
Nick took his son to a small, high balcony in The Palace, one that overlooked the northern reaches of Sesstria, The Goddess looming in the distance.
Nick leaned on the stone balcony, trying to think of the words he was going to use to explain himself. He had been thinking about that for weeks, but nothing seemed adequate. He felt like he had to defend his choice. In his heart, he knew that he had to marry Breck. There was no other option. His love for that man was so strong, it wouldn't tolerate anything else. But there was still the question of Sally.
"Adam--"
"Dad, I know what you're going to tell me." Adam leaned next to him, putting one hand on the railing. "Do you think i'm an idiot? I've seen how busy you've been recently, and it wasn't hard to guess what you've been planning for."
Nick opened his mouth, but the words wouldn't come. How did he know? More importantly, how did he feel about it? His tone was joking, but his expression was hard.
"When did he ask you?"
Nick looked at his son, almost in disbelief. "Who?"
Adam rolled his eyes. "Breck, obviously. When did he ask you to be confirmed as soulmates?"
"About two weeks ago."
"And you waited to tell me, because...?"
Nick breathed out. He turned back out and looked at The Goddess. Her pink, ragged stone was glowing in the sun. "To be honest, I meant to tell you dozens of times. It didn't feel real until recently, when we got the date. When that happened, I knew I couldn't keep it from you any more."
"You didn't need to keep it from me."
"I didn't know how you were going to react, Adam."
Adam looked at Nick for a second, and then nodded. He turned out, following his dad's gaze. "I can't blame you, I guess, for being worried about that, especially after how I reacted to you telling me that you and Breck were seeing eachother."
"I don't blame you for being upset," Nick said . "Even now, if you weren't... ecstatic about this news, I would understand. It's not easy for me, either. I... I keep thinking about your mom, about what she would think of all of this."
"What she would think about all of us turning gay?"
"No, that's not what I--"
"That's what you meant."
