If there was one thing that Uwo knew how to do, it was how to follow people. He had been doing it for his entire life. He knew how to be in the background, unremarkable, unimportant.
He tucked himself deeper into the dark corner, pulled his hood further over his head, and watched as the golden-eyed man walked past him, traveling down the main street. Uwo never let the man leave his sight. The road was lit by flickering torches and bathed by the yellow-hued windows of the buildings around it. It wasn't hard to see his target.
Naar moved gracefully, with confidence, as though the people in front of him weren't there, as though he was the only man on the busy road. His head was high, his eyes were lazy and bored, his hands were relaxed.
Uwo was struck by how little the man had changed since they were younger. He was still the pompous, hot-tempered idiot that had somehow managed to represent Paxta at the international panae match. He had aged, sure. He had cut that terrible mop of hair, so now his head was covered by a single layer of thick, black stubble. And his short beard reached his cheeks, finally. He had aged, but he hadn't changed.
The streets were alive with energy, light and music filled the air, fluttering over the gathered crowds like annoying prescenias. Uwo had never been to Xazari before, but he hadn't expected the small, oasis town to be this crowded. Clearly, something was going on tonight, a festival of some kind. The people around them were noisy and boisterous, obviously drunk, obviously having a good time. People were dancing in the street, making out noisily in the alleys, and fucking hard in the upper rooms of the many inns.
But Uwo kept his eyes on his target, kept his eyes fixed on Naar. The man began to sink into the crowds. Uwo was forced to move. He slid out of the corner he had been hiding in and began to follow the man.
Naar continued to navigate his way through the sea of people. Uwo made sure to maintain a healthy distance, never getting too close. But he also made sure that he was always in a position to see the other man. It wasn't an easy task, made more difficult by the plain, beige cloak that Naar had draped over his shoulders. Uwo's mark blended in with the sand-stone buildings and dusty cobbles below.
They walked through the center of the town, circling around a large, stone building. It looked different from the rest of the structures in Xazari, more ancient, as though it had been there before the rest of the town had sprung up around it. As Uwo rounded the other side, still following Naar, he saw a syphon leaning out of the main door, smiling at the revelers on the street.
An altar. A big one. Bigger than some of the altars in Izal, that was for sure.
Uwo left the building behind him and continued to follow Naar, staying in the shadows, shifting around the gathered crowds, noiselessly, like a ghost moving through an old building. He was silent. He was a stranger in the crowd. He was a follower.
Naar walked to the edge of Xazari, where the cobbled roads turned into an endless desert. Torches lit the walls that bordered the town, casting flickering lights on the ground. The final building on the right was high, secluded, and held up by a stone foundation. Through the windows, Uwo could see that most of the floors were dark. But the third one, the very top, was lit by candles, and there were shadows shifting in the room beyond. The door to the building was blocked by a big, burly man with crossed arms.
What was Lord Naar doing here? Why was he obeying the instructions on that mysterious letter that the legion had intercepted? Uwo pulled the crinkly piece of paper out of his pocket and quickly scanned it again.
Brothers,
Once again, The Light Caster comes to fight tyranny.
Once again, he rises to free the oppressed.
