Until We Wilt

For the April All Time Low Microfic Challenge: Bloom.

Jack had expected some sort of scene from Alex on their wedding day.

Because, after knowing him for practically all his life, then passing to the subsequent stages of friends, just friends, more than friends, boyfriends, and, as of now, fiancé, Jack had learned that the elder was often the one to make grand, if not elaborate gestures.

But this?

The scene, no, this altar manifesto, occurring before him?

That is, of Alex holding Jack's hands between his own, while he professed his love for the younger in the form of his wedding vows.

Ones that, in that moment, Jack knew he'd remember forever.

"Jack, like the flowers that bloom today, and tomorrow, and all the days to come, I promise to always let our love flourish, to make it blossom, to have it always come first. Because I love you more than anything in this world. I'll spend eternity proving it to you."

Vows, that Jack, also, did not expect.

Rather, he was left speechless at Alex's devotion.

Because he didn't have anything to vow back with!

Oh, sure he had his own vows prepared, a list of reasons he'd penned with his closest friends and family as to why Alex was his soulmate, not to mention memorized, as if it was his new favorite song, but they now paled in comparison to Alex's.

Because, suddenly, what Jack had planned on referencing, that is, those moments in either of their bedrooms that went beyond just listening to music, seemed nothing more than trivial.

And, trivial was not what Jack felt for Alex. On the contrary, his feelings for the elder went beyond any vocabulary Jack would ever possess, no matter the advice given to him by songwriters, or books he'd read.

Truth of the matter was, no words could ever express just how much Jack cherished Alex, what with the way the elder was constantly by his side, encouraging him in all pursuits, and, above all, just loved him for the person he was, faults and all.

In that spirit, then, and knowing very well that he would never be able to fully express the length of his sentiments, Jack squeezed Alex's hands before sharing his own vows, in front of all their loved ones to see.

"Alex, if it weren't for you, I'd be either dead or homeless in a ditch somewhere. So, every day that we're together, I promise to love you and to do everything I can to never let our relationship wilt."

At the use of the uncommon word, Alex beamed, a gesture that led Jack to know he'd said the right thing, even more so, with what Alex proclaimed next.

"Then let us not wilt."
