Winston had found footprints in the sand. And my dread got worse. The hair on the back of my neck stood up. The rest of the Gladers came crowding around. Minho, Jason and Winston had flashlights and were waving them around. I stood up, and pulled my gun back out. With the flashlight held up and the gun I slowly crept forwards, away from the group.
Teresa and Aris were suddenly at my back.
"Wolf pack sticks together." Aris nodded solumly.
"Protect the pack." Teresa said with a nod, "Show no fear-"
"Respect the Alpha; teach the young; lead your companions-" Aris cut in, reciting the Wolf code. I smiled at him encouragingly.
"-survive each day; hunt your enemies; adapt to the new environment; demonstrate no weakness. Never back down; Leave your mark; dissolve into the shadows." The three of us finished together.
I glanced quickly over their shoulder to the rest of the Gladers. They stood in a clump, eyes wide and watching. I passed a gun to Aris and Tessa pulled one out.
"Sisters." We said quietly, clasping the backs of each other's heads and placing our foreheads together for a second. We took a quick steadying breath, stealing ourselves.
"Aris, my three o'clock. Tessa, my 9 o'clock."
They nodded. And we slowly crept forwards, sweeping our guns back and forth. I followed the foot prints. My ears strained for any kind of sound other than the breathing of the guys behind us. We slowly crept closer and closer to a chained door. Aris and Tessa sweeping the floors above us as best they could with the small beams of light. There was a small crack I peered through with the beam of light.
Like everything else it seemed quiet and deserted. But I still had an uncomfortable feeling, this place wasn't what it seemed.
"Empty." I whispered.
"I see nothing." Aris confirmed
"Still doesn't feel right." Teresa said, her eyes still flicking around.
"Oh I agree. We need to leave as quietly and quickly as possible." I agreed.
Thomas and the rest came over. Thomas went straight for the door.
"We should leave."
"You said it was safe." Thomas said, looking over his shoulder.
"I said from WICKED. For NOW. Doesn't mean we should make this out new home. We need to be quiet and leave as fast as possible."
"Well let's look around first. Someone's been down here. Come on. Open up." Thomas said, disregarding what I said.
Dug and Adam helped Thomas push and shove the door. The door squeaked and grinded, the rust and sand that was in the way made such a loud noise. I flinched, and spun around holding up my gun and light. Teresa and Aris doing the same. Minho also spun, pulling out a machete he took from the way station.
"I don't like this." I repeated. "Something's not right."
I looked over. They had got the door opened a bit more, Frypan now helping.
"Just thomas the door already."
Thomas actually flipped me off and I couldn't help but grin back. The guy got the door opened enough to slip through. Thomas went first, followed by everyone else. Grinding my teeth I went to follow but Minho slid his hand into mine.
"Hey...Jess?" He asked, he was hesitant and it made me stop and fully turn to him.
"Yeah?"
His face was pulled tight and anxious. His eyes were jumpy. He wasn't looking me in the eye and he was chewing his cheek. I placed a hand on his cheek, making him look at me.
