Tracing her fingers along the doorknob, Bubba halted with unease as she prolonged opening the door. The fear of rejection still plagued the girl's mind, like an itch you can't seem to get rid of. Biting down on her lip, she grabbed ahold of her apron looking longingly at the door. She wanted to know at least and have some kind of peace of mind that she had at least for a fleeting moment got to live how she wanted to. That this choice wasn't perturbed by any of her conflicting thoughts and other people saying she shouldn't and couldn't. Bubba didn't want this to be another regret littered across her life.
She wiped away at the sweat slowly dripping down her palms trying to calm herself from her erratic thoughts. Letting out a shaky sigh, she rejuvenated her heart once more and finally guided her hand toward the door. Bubba knocked against the wooden door, awaiting a response from the other side. But only an uncomfortable silence returned. But before she could knock again, a faint noise rang through the door. The thought of Y/n's response elated Bubba dearly so with excitement she leaned in closer to hear her.
But instead of any positive elation from Y/n's voice, a deep worry resided in her stomach as she heard the soft sobs of a sorrowful girl. Of course, she knew who they belonged to and it saddened her as such. Bubba opened her mouth slightly, her tongue wandering to what words to say. But nothing came out.
Desperately she wanted to get out a word, something to help her feel better than she is now. But finding the exact words isn't something Bubba was so accustomed to. And it grew frustrating not to do so for Bubba. She was frustrated that there was someone who had lent her hand out and she couldn't do the same for them.
Was I even worth it? Worth saving? That thought swirled as she quietly sat down, running her hands roughly through her blackened hair. If she couldn't do this then what was the point of her standing next to Y/n? She could not bear the thought of not being worthy enough to be right by her side.
I shouldn't be-
But no that was dumb, she thought. Quickly enough she seemed to have snipped off that festering weed in her mind before it took effect. She would take Jackie's advice to heart and accept it wholeheartedly. Bubba was no longer the girl she was before, she was no longer chained to the grievances of her past. She was her own person regardless of anyone's opinion.
Still, she struggled to find the words to comfort Y/n beneath the door. She was there alone, crying without support. Bubba wanted to be that pillar of support, through her own volition.
Placing her hand into the front pocket of her bright yellow apron, she found the sensation of a crumpled up piece of paper. Taking it out, she unfolded each crinkle outwardly and after doing so, she touched the surface of the paper with such softness and longingness as if she held a newborn baby. It was the paper that Y/n used to talk to her, to breach the gap between the two of them. She kept it right before leaving that horrid house, it was the only fond memory she made in that home. But it also gave light to a path she thought in her entire life she could never walk upon. A path filled with friendship, and laughter, a chest filled with new sights to see, and even maybe perhaps love.
Bubba would use this to return the favor. She took a pencil from the desk situated right next to the beds. It was chipped and oddly chewed?
It had character, Bubba thought.
She got down onto her knees, hunching over against the floor for support. Gripping the pencil, she slowly itched the lead, a trail of black following with each motion, revealing itself quite apparently against the white piece of paper. Bubba paused then wrote, paused, and wrote. After some time, she held up the paper, and with a sure sigh, she slid it underneath the door along with the pencil.
