Everything was fine after Martha went and spoke to the principal. Martha being the ex-staff of Michael's school was able to get the principal to pull up the CCTV footage of that day and the days before. Cara went along as a witness. Those two boys were then called and warned. That was a Friday. The very next week Martha started going to work. She went back to teaching science for classes 6, 7, and 8 students. Probably the warnings or the fact that Michael's mum was on the premises 24/7, Mickey's bullies stayed away from him. So did I.
A week later, on Wednesday, when I was home alone, I had a visitor at noon. I frowned and hid behind the door. Mickey walked in, his full white uniform was now dark brown. I knew what would have happened. I knew it was them. I stood in my hiding place and waited for someone to follow behind but no one did. Mickey got on his tiptoes and locked the door. Then he walked away to his room. I noticed dry tears on his face as he crossed by but he didn't notice me. He left his bag by the door and removed his clothes. He threw them in the bathroom and went to his bed wearing only his cut-arm-banian and underwear. I crept over to his room. I waited for him to talk to Pooh but he didn't. He just sat on the bed with his head down.
Giving in, I stepped in front of him and whistled to get his attention. He looked at me and then back at the floor. "Hey, Midget what happened?"
"Rahul pushed me in the mud," he whispered.
"What the- What did your mum do?" I asked and sat next to him.
"Rahul said it was ac-een-dent and said sorry. 4 times. A lot of teachers were there. So Mummy couldn't do anything." Those sneaky bitches.
"I'm getting your water gun. That is the only thing that kept them away-"
"How do you know about that?" He questioned. Great RJ, rant yourself out.
"I uh... oh I'm just asking. Don't you have a water gun? You can shoot them with water next time they bully you," I pretend.
"Mummy took it."
"Why?" I played dumb. He went on to explain how someone at school gave it to him and that he thought it was his friend Layla. "Well let's go find it," I said and he shook his head.
"Don't want. Mummy will be mad."
"But-"
"Layla told me another way to shoo them." A small smile creeps on his face.
"Oh really?" I sat down again.
"She said scream. Scream really loud so everyone will hear," he explained.
I nodded. "Smart," I agreed and patted his head. "I'm glad you have someone to look out for you bud." Other than me. He nods without saying anything more. So I just sat with him in silence. I swear though if this happened again, I'll make him take the gun.
"Yo Midget did you eat?" I asked upon realisation. He shook his head. So I fetched his bag and pulled out his lunch box. "C'mon let us go out and eat. Your mum won't like you eating in the room," I told him and walked away.
Sparks.
I looked down and saw Mickey holding my hand. But how? Why is there a spark only when he touches me? Or is this just a feeling of having physical feelings? I don't remember. I wanted to pull away but I didn't. I let him hold my hand as we walked to the living room. We sat on the floor and he let go of my hand. I would be lying if I said I didn't want his hand on mine again.
"Here," I held out his lunch box. He took it from me and started eating. I simply watched. "Chu want?" He asked showing me sambar rice with chicken vindaloo in his box. My favourite. It looked appetizing but I knew I couldn't eat it. So I shook my head. "You ate?" He asked. I just nodded and faked a smile.
I let him eat in silence without saying anything until he decided it was time for an interrogation. "Where did you go? You said you would be my fend. I thought you not like me." He pouted making me feel guilty.
"No no no- I mean of course I like you, Midget. You are my friend. My only friend to be honest. People usually don't like me. I just uhm..." He was looking at me innocently. "I went out. To another place. As soon as I returned I came here to see you, my friend. "
"Really!?" He exclaimed. I nodded laughing in guilt. Of course, I couldn't tell him 'Hey I was just lying around and you walked in.' Already I seem like a thief.
"Where do you stay?"
"Uhm.." your backyard. "The house next door."
"With the doggie!?"
"No, the other. Now eat up. Don't make the food wait." He nodded and finished the remaining food. I walked with him as he left his lunch box in the kitchen.
"Soo what do we do now?" I asked as he stared at me.
"Wanna play hide and peek?"
"That's hide and seek. And uhm-" I panicked as a thought crossed my mind. What if midway he stopped seeing me again and I became invisible?
"How about marbles?" I suggested. Someone rang the doorbell right then. I stepped back ready to run. "Don't say a word," I warned and he walked away ignoring me. Great. I slipped out through the kitchen and went to the backyard.
It was Deny. He carried Mickey and walked inside inquiring whether he ate and if he was okay. Mickey replied that he was.
I sighed and sat under a mango tree. I could hear the voices from inside the house but I didn't pay much attention to it. All I could think about was what my next lie would be to disappear. Well at least hide from that Midget. Maybe I'll just disappear and he will forget about me? But the thought of hurting him made me feel bad. I groaned in agitation and punched the floor. I've never felt anything for the people who stayed before the Johnsons. All I felt was rage because they were staying in my house and they were mean people. These people have dodged me and taken my property. Or maybe they've been dodged by that fat dude who calls himself the owner. I don't know. But whatever it is, I couldn't stand having people around... but maybe...Just maybe the reason why I haven't pulled any tricks on the Johnsons is because of that midget. Maybe it is because they are Anglo-Indians with familiar names so I relate to them? Or well specifically relate to him.
"Mickey! Where are you going?" I heard his dad yell.
"To the backyard to play!"
He walked outside and ran over to me. "Whatcha doing here?" I whispered. He should be asking you that RJ.
"What is your name?" He asked instead.
"I hope you didn't tell your father about me Midget. He would kick me out-"
"No. I keep secret don't worry. I just wanna know your name," he pouted.
"RJ."
"I'm Mickey." He extended his hand. I hesitated. "You not like handshake?" I wanted to say no but I found myself shaking his hand and feeling sparks run through my veins. I pulled away quickly and luckily Mickey didn't notice. "Oh! Is Ah-J short form for somefin? My name is Mickey Johnson. That means I'm MJ!" he spoke excitedly making me laugh.
"It is just RJ. Do you want me to call you MJ ?"
"Yes! That would be buddy names. Like Mickey and Minnie." What an example..,
"Awe but I like Midget better," I teased.
"What does it mean?" He questioned taking me by surprise.
"Uhm someone who is sma- it means a cute lovable person," I lied. But hey it fits either way.
"Okay, I like. You wanna read a story I wrote?"
"Oh, you're a writer now? Sure."
He handed me a paper and I went through it. I expected some ranty bedtime story but to my surprise, it wasn't some cliché animal story. In his story, the jungle is ruled by elephants who bully everyone. "Wow, this is lovely, Midget. You should-" My words get cut off by his dad's presence.
"Mickey who are you talking to?... Mickey why is your story lying on the ground!?"
