In the morning, Cara came to visit. She sat on Mickey’s bed and placed her Rapunzel doll that she was holding, beside Mickey. Mickey took the doll and hugged it to his chest while he stayed in bed. "How are you feeling?" The small boy answered in a small voice, "I'm okay." Then he handed over the doll back to her. She shook her hand, “Keep it.”
"We gonna play?"
"No, I want you to keep Rapunzel."
Mickey gasped, "Really?"
"Yeah but promise me you will take good care of her?"
He nodded and crossed his heart making her smile.
"Mickey!" Maratha walked in and Mickey sat up to show his mother the doll, "Mummy! Mummy! Look Cara told me I can keep Puzel." Martha didn't look pleased. She opened her mouth to say something when her daughter interrupted, "Mum, can we talk outside?" Suddenly Cara didn't look like a child anymore. The way she looked at Mickey and then back at her mum with determination and care mirrored an adult. Martha nodded and told Mickey to go have a bath. He obeyed while Cara and her mother went to the living room.
"Cara, why did you give that to him? I was just going to buy him another doll like his old one," Martha questioned.
"Ma, he needs familiar things not new ones. He misses his old friend and doll. He always liked playing with Rapunzel. That is why I gave it to him. You should have seen how happy he looked."
"But Cara you know your brother is getting influenced because of it. He wants to do girly things. That is not good. He can't-"
"Ma, please! Mickey is sad. He is heartbroken. Let us not make him sadder by telling him not to be himself," Cara replied.
"But Cara you don't understand. This might lead to something else. He will get bullied if he keeps doing those things," Martha said in concern.
"I know mama but don't worry. Mickey will be okay. He is a strong boy. I saw how he stood up to those bullies. He can protect himself. Let him be happy ma. It is just a doll. If it makes him happy let him have it," Cara said.
"But-"
"She is right," Deny said walking up to them. Not wishing to hear further, I left. I climbed into Mickey's room and looked around. I lay on the floor and looked under the bed. I saw a box and pulled out the box which turned out to be a business board game.
"Whatchu doing?" I turned around and saw Mickey standing by the bathroom. A towel around his waist standing bare chest. "Let's play," I said and stood up.
"But school?"
"You need a day off. You are sad and I'm going to cheer you up," I told him and carried the Rapunzel doll.
"You will play with me?" I nodded. His face lit up and ran out of the room to convince his mum.
It took a lot of please ma’s and puppy eyes to get Martha to cave. She wasn't pleased but eventually, after what seemed like forever, she gave in. "Okay, but you better answer the telephone whenever I call. I'll lock the outside gate with the lock, but you keep the door closed too and the backyard door. Don't open it no matter what." Mickey nodded. Before leaving for work, Martha smothered him with kisses and then the Johnsons left. Mickey came hopping into the room looking for me. "Ah-J?"
"I'm here," I yelled from the backyard peeking through the window. Pulling myself up, I jumped on the windowsill. Mickey gasped and said, “Spiderman.” I chuckled and jumped into his room. I sat down on the bed and grabbed the box. Mickey sat in front of me as I laid the money out.
