7th November 2020... I'll never forget this date.
I walked into Nelson's office that morning ready to be assigned my daily tasks. "Good Morning Doc." Hearing my voice, He looked up from his file and smiled.
"Good Morning. Lavina is on maternity leave for the next three months so you'll be covering for her," He said and handed me the file he was reading. "Those are her patients. One has Alzheimer and one is in a coma. Everything you need to know is in the file. You may come to see me if you have any questions." I nodded. "Oh and can you go over to Daniel's office? Please ask him to hand me the updated report of the patient in ward 13?" He asked. Fuck...no... Was my exactly my thoughts, but yet I agreed.
It had been almost a week since I had spoken to him after our fight. Though he was trying to reach out through calls and texts, I replied to none. At work, we simply avoided each other to keep it professional. Or at least I did. I knew the healthy thing to do was to tell him that we were done but I couldn't bring myself to say it. I had a breakdown the previous night just thinking of the fact that I needed to put an end to my one year and and a half relationship. All the memories we made— It made my heart hurt.
On my way to his office, I saw my best friend Sarah walk by. I thanked my lucky star and ran to her. "Sarah!" She turned, looked at me and smiled brightly through her transparent mask. She then told the nurse she was with, to go and looked at me. "How are you?" She asked and I shrugged. I placed my hands in my pockets and looked around. "Hey, uhm, can you go in there and ask Daniel to give Nelson the updated report on ward 13?" I asked.
"Still not talking, uh?"
I shook my head. Without another word, she turned on her heel and went to his office. I didn't want to be anywhere near Daniel. So I walked down the hallway and turned into another passage that led to more wards. I waited for Sarah over there. I saw her dart by and I strolled up to her. "Sarah! I'm here!" She turned to face me. Sarah was no longer smiling like she did when she went into his room. She looked startled. Her lips were tightly perched. "Uhm everything alright?" I enquired.
"Uh? Yeah. Yeah. W-we should go." she grabbed my hand and started dragging me.
"Sarah, what's wrong?"
"Come. Come with me. Not here."
I stood my ground stopping her. "Tell me here."
"Your boy- Daniel is in there with Amelia."
"Okay?" I asked not comprehending why that startled her so much. Amelia worked under Daniel. So seeing her in his office wasn't unusual. But then she said the words that made my heart stop beating.
"Half naked. On top of her!"
I stood there for a moment. Despite not seeing them, a clear image flashed before my eyes. I felt disgusted. I should have ran away, but instead, I ran back. I stormed into his office full of rage. I saw Daniel buttoning his shirt. I noticed red lipstick smudged by his lips. I wanted to throw up on his face. My blood boiled. I was too busy staring daggers at him that I didn't notice Amelia slip out of his office.
"Layla..." He walked towards me and I stepped back.
"How dare you?" I gritted my teeth while trying my best not to cry.
"Layla I can explain. It-"
I chuckled, "Explain? Are you going to tell me this was an accident?"
"Listen to me... I didn't mean to, baby. I swear. I just missed you. She smelt like you. She came close and I thought it was you." He took a step forward and took my left hand in his. "You know I would never cheat on you. I really love you."
