I can't stand a prologue either but this is short and sweet. You'll get an idea of the situation you came from.
Enjoy!!

It was a tiring day, taking double shifts and working overtime. You closed the door to your house behind you, eyes barely open. “I'm home!” You called out, swaying lightly as you made your way to the kitchen, resting the fast food you bought on the counter.
The thundering sound of someone running down the stairs caught your attention, revealing your twin siblings as they ran towards you.
Tonya, the sister, held her teddy bear as she rushed your way. Her eyes gleaming with the hazel shade your father gifted her, her dark skin healthy and clear for now.
Right behind her was her twin brother, Eric. A near exact twin of your father, but his eyes were a dark brown given to him by his mother. He reached out to grab Tonya, as if cheating to win a race, only to slip on the carpet and fall forehead first to the floor.
You hit your fist on the counter, struggling to hide your laugh while Eric himself was laughing to the point he couldn't breathe. He attempted to get up, leaning on the couch for support. He decided he'd just stay there for a minute, wiping his tears from laughing so hard.
Tonya paid no mind to her brother, grinning up at you as she held her plushie to her chest. You tickled her chubby cheek as a greeting, a grin on your face as your friend, Lyssa, came down the stairs.
“How've you been?” You walked over to give your friend a tight hug. She eagerly returned it, “Baby, you know these kids don't listen.” She rolled her eyes, making you laugh.
Lyssa was the only friend you ever made in your life, she protected you from bullies at a very young age. Though you two had a failed attempt at a romantic relationship, Lyssa was always a call away no matter how busy she was. You were just glad the friendship between you two had never died out.
“Thanks again for taking care of them, Lyssa.” You muttered so that only she could hear. She playfully whispered loud into your ear, “Anytime, anyplace.” The sensation tickled your ear, and you smacked her shoulder with a smile on your face.
“Mama, can we watch Naruto?” Eric asked. He took a running start towards the couch, throwing himself on since he was too small to properly get on. Tonya overheard him and rushed to the couch, getting on the same way her brother did.
The name made you smile, though it was a bittersweet name. Your mother had passed when you were too young, and it turned out she was a month pregnant when she passed. When your dad, who fought to be with her for years, found out about both news after returning from an overseas job, he lost it. His only way of coping was being a ho, it wasn't as bad as being an alcoholic or resorting to abuse, but the neglect still hurt you in the long run.
He spent most of his nights in other women's beds, and gave you a sibling every year. Still, as responsible as some of the mother's were, you found yourself thrown into a caretaker mindset. You had to learn how to handle puberty with Lyssa because you had no maternal figure to really speak about it to.
Because of all these things, your siblings often referred to you as their mother. At first it was an accident, but they all just rolled with it. You, the eldest, were the most stable mother figure they could have, and they wouldn't change it for anything.
You dramatically sighed before grabbing the remote, “I'll get it ready, but you gotta start eating before you can watch anything.”
On cue, Lyssa went to the kitchen to prepare their plates with the food you brought home. Tonya and Eric cheered, watching the screen as you set up the anime.
Most folks got upset with you when they heard you let your siblings watch Naruto, but unlike them, you had authority over your young ones. Not only that, but they actually respected you too. You gave them a serious talk about not recreating anything from the show, and that it wasn't real. They knew better than to disobey you unless they were looking for a whooping.
Once Lyssa handed them their respective plates, the twins grinned as you played the last episode they left off at. Peeking at the screen, you remembered they last watched Jiraiya’s introduction.
Impressive, not even Paw Patrol could get them as invested. Sure they a lil older now but they still struggled to focus on one thing for long periods of time. ‘Naruto gon do it every time.’ You nodded to yourself before going to the kitchen to fix your plate.
You were met with a hand holding a plate in front of you, but instead of it being the fast food you bought, it was-
“Lyssa, you gotta be from Louisiana. I ain't ever met no white woman that could cook sum like this.” You grinned as you grabbed the plate, the aroma making your stomach growl.
Lyssa rolled her eyes, moving her blonde hair behind her ear. “Girl, eat the damn food. I made it for lunch earlier and saved some cuz I know how you get when you gotta eat fast food for dinner.”
You looked at Lyssa as she cleaned the counter and put the rest of the food in plastic containers. This girl loved you so much, and she showed it in all the ways she knew you'd recognize it. You knew she really wanted to rekindle a relationship with you, but you kept firm on the fact that you both weren't ready.
Well, Lyssa did a full 180 and changed so much for the better. Not only did your words encourage her to do better between you two, but her life transformed.
She gained the courage to fix her relationship with her family, got her own apartment and a great paying job to support herself and she healed so much mental and emotional trauma that got in the way of your relationship.
All so that you'd say yes to being her girlfriend again.
But now that she was practically perfect, and you were struggling in college, work and family, you didn't have time for romance. Lyssa was the first and last person you ever dated, because you couldn't trust anyone else with the way your life was. The tables turned drastically, and you weren't sure anymore.
A hand on your shoulder snapped you out of your thoughts. Your (e/c) eyes met dark brown, and you relaxed when you recognized those eyes to be Lyssa's. She gave you a warm look, not even hiding the amount of love she had for you in her eyes.
“Let's go sit down and watch some Naruto.” Lyssa tilted her head to the living room, and you nodded as she took your plate so you could get comfortable on the other couch.
You sighed when you made contact with the couch, finally relaxing after such a long day at work. Lyssa put your plate on the glass table in front of you two, wrapping an arm around your shoulders as you leaned against her.
This felt nice, being near Lyssa always made you feel better. The fact that she was crazy over you still blew your mind, despite the relationship being years ago now. Despite all your ups and downs, you knew Lyssa would always have your back.
You smiled to yourself as you looked over at the twins. They were so focused on the scene where Jiraiya defeated Ebisu that you had to tell Eric to lean back into the couch before he could fall off.
Then it came, the sleepiness. You didn't even get to eat yet, but the sleep overtook you so aggressively. You don't know how long you were fighting to stay awake but you were glad to see Tonya and Eric safe on the couch before you fell asleep.
"My child, finally you can return home."
