Waking to the rise of beaming light, I found myself taking in a deep breath, blinking awake to the quiet serenity of our shared room. San was still asleep next to me on his back, his head turned away, breaths deep and content. Sitting upright, I leaned over, smiling at him groggily, gently rubbing at my eyes. The weight of something unfamiliar drags my focus to my other hand, spotting a reminder of the night previous.
It hadn't been a dream. It was real, and the ring on my finger was a tangible reminder of our commitment. It was shining beautifully in the gentle sunlight, leading me to study the delicate engravings woven into the medal of the ring. He truthfully knew me, my interests and my hobbies, crafting an idea for a ring to capture my essence. I wouldn't be able to express what I personally had dreamed of, considering the mere thought of being engaged to someone felt more of a fantasy than a reality, but somehow, this ring felt right. I didn't know it before, but this ring was everything I could've asked for.
Leaning over, I press a kiss to his temple, smiling when he stirs slightly, turning towards me, taking a subtle breath inwards. This moment, serene and quiet, reminded me of a time back in the detention center where we had both been too stubborn to realize what lay beneath the surface. He was asleep and I was kept awake by my fears, and it was then that I let myself indulge in something that felt like a hopeless dream. I kissed the corner of his lips then, too scared to admit to my overwhelming feelings. But now, engaged to that same person I had been imprisoned with, I feel no string of hesitance holding me within the constraints of fear.
As he warily turns towards me, arms reaching out in a wordless plea of searching for me, I let myself sink back into the comfort of the bed and covers, watching as San's sleepy smile curls, sending a wave of warmth through my skin. I had fully intended on leaving bed, preparing for the day ahead of expressing the joy and love we had shared the night before, but San's embrace was rather enticing, leading me to place a pause on my plans for the moment.
"Good morning, fiance," I murmur, watching as San's smile grows.
"G'morning, fiance." San groggily responds, his eyes still closed from the haze of sleep still cast over him.
"Sleep okay?" I ask, watching as San nods, inhaling deeply. "Good."
"I jus' want to stay here for a bit." San says lowly, pulling me closer as his arms wrap around me seamlessly.
"I'm okay with that," I sigh, leaning closer, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "The rest of the world can wait."
"Mm," San affirms in his groggy state, reaching his hand over, grabbing my chin lightly, pulling my attention downwards. Understanding his intentions, I moved in to press my lips to his, swallowing the sigh that he lets melt into the tenderness of our kiss.
