chapter three
you aren't afraid
IT FIRST HAPPENED WHEN IVY WAS FIVE, it had been a seemingly ordinary day. She was playing outside in the warm sunlight, her laughter mingling with the cheerful chirping of birds and the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze.
As Ivy chased after the neighbor's cat, her young heart filled with innocent joy, she reached out to pet the furry creature, her small hand outstretched in a gesture of friendship. But in an instant, with a sudden thud, the cat collapsed to the ground, its once vibrant eyes now vacant and lifeless. Ivy stared in shock at the limp form before her, her mind struggling to comprehend the suddenness of the creature's demise.
She had cried when her mother buried the cat's body in their background and gave her small gloves to hide her skin. As Ivy grew, so too did the shadow that followed her. At the tender age of eight, tragedy struck when a simple touch proved fatal. In a moment of innocent curiosity, another child reached out to Ivy, only to meet his untimely demise. The horror of that day seared itself into Ivy's memory, a grim reminder of the deadly curse that lurked beneath her skin.
For the first time in her life, Ivy felt the warmth of another person's touch without the crippling fear of causing harm.
As Ivy clutched her old teddy bear tightly in one hand and Aro's hand in the other, she felt a strange sense of comfort wash over her—a fleeting moment of solace amidst the chaos of her new reality. With each step she took, the weight of her past seemed to grow lighter, replaced by a glimmer of hope for the future that lay ahead.
"Where are we going?" Ivy blurted out. She was never really good with silence, it was anything but enjoyable. It was a reminder of the chaos that lurked within her mind, a cacophony of doubts and fears that threatened to consume her from within.
"Not long, my dead," Aro turned to face her. "The airport should be close."
"Airport?" she questioned curiously. "I have never been in a plane. Where are we going?"
"Volterra," Aro responded and Ivy almost wanted to shut her mouth, afraid that he would get tired of her questions and tell her to shut up. "In Italy," he added almost as if he sensed she didn't know where the place was.
Her eyes widened. "Italy?" she exclaimed, a smile spreading across her face.
As they walked, Ivy's gaze fell upon a woman standing ahead of them, dressed in sleek black attire. The woman's expression was unreadable as she observed their approach.
"Don't worry, my dear, that's Renata," Aro reassured Ivy, gently guiding her forward.
"Is she a monster like us?" Ivy blurted out, unable to contain her curiosity.
