I Promise

All Superman wants is to make sure Bruce is safe. And Bruce and Batman are the same person. And Batman told Superman not to follow him on the mission, that he could handle it by himself.

And, of course, Clark wasn't going to listen.

The Kryptonian soared a safe distance away from Bruce, making sure the Dark Knight didn't see him. Clark knew that he would be in a lot of trouble if Bruce saw him. He looked around, trying to see if maybe Batgirl or Robin were hiding along the buildings, but he saw no one.

Clark was so distracted that he didn't notice that Bruce disappeared. I was looking away for less than ten seconds! Clark quickly landed, scanning around for his lover.

"Kal!"

Clark jumped, turning around quickly. Bruce stood there, arms crossed and a sour expression on his face. "We've talked about this! I told you not to follow me here!" He growled. Clark could see Bruce roll his eyes through his mask. "But you still can't listen, can you?"

"Well, can you blame me?" Clark stepped closer. "Any time you say 'Clark, stay home. I'll be back', usually means that it's dangerous and you don't want me there to see you get hurt. I know you Bats, I know that you hate it when I fawn over you when you get hurt. But I hate it when you do. I worry about you."

There was a familiar stubborn clench in Bruce's jaw "I can handle it on my own." he said, his voice gravelly. "Why are you always worried about me?"

"Because I've seen you get hurt before and I hate it."

"Kal." Bruce's voice became a little softer. "I need you to trust me. Nothing is going to work out if we can't trust each other. I'll be back, safe and sound."

Clark still wasn't convinced. "But what if this time you don't?"

"Don't." Bruce held up a hand, signaling for Clark to stop talking. "Nothing is going to happen to me. I'm going to be fine."

"Bruce-"

"You must think I'm made of paper." Bruce growled. "I'm not fragile, I'll be fine. I worry about you all the time and I don't stop you from going on missions."

Clark paused, and then smirked. "You worry about me?"

"How could I not?" Bruce asked. "You're not indestructible. One small shard of Kryptonite could kill you, Kal. One tiny shard. Anyone could have one and I worry that one day, a villain will have one and you'll die. But I let you go, because it's your job. So please, go back to the Batcave and stay there."

Clark suddenly became angry. "Why can't I go with you?"

"Why can't I go with you on your missions?"

"Because I handle villains with ten times your strength."

"Exactly, I handle villains ten times your brain. I can't worry about you and complete the mission at the same time."

"Let me go with you."

Bruce sighed, walking forward and moving past Clark. "We're not having this discussion. Go back to the Batcave."

"Bruce." Clark whispered, putting all his desperation in his voice, trying to lure Bruce back. Surprisingly, it worked.

Bruce turned back around and put a hand on Clarks shoulder. "Everything is going to be okay," he whispered. "I made you a promise, remember? That I'll always come back to you. I plan to keep that promise." He moved his hand up, resting it on the nape of Clarks neck. "I know you want to be by my side, but sometimes I want to do things by myself."

"I don't know what I'd do if I lost you." Clark sighed.

"And you're not going to. Not for a long time." Bruce leaned up and pressed his lips to Clarks, sealing yet another promise between them.

"This is going to be an argument we're going to have often, isn't it?" Clark said, smiling as Bruce pulled away.

Bruce walked away, smiling as well. "I promise." He whispered, jumping off the roof, knowing full well that Clark heard him.
