Chapter 20: The Last Page

"All those in favor of banning romance from the library, raise your hand!" the mayor instructs.

      This is it. Who's going to go against me?

      The only sound in the room is Marjorie's lone 'yay'.

      "All opposed?"

      A chorus of 'nays' echoes from the council members.

      "You did it, (Y/N)!" Bang Chan cheers.

      "No, we did it. I could not have done it without all the help from you and Janet and the other townspeople."

      "We're quite the dream team, aren't we?"

      "You cannot be serious! Mayor Klanderman, I implore you to reconsider." Marjorie cries out.

      "We had a vote. My hands are tied." the mayor replies.

      Marjorie hugs as she grabs some paperwork from her seat in the council room.

      "The next order of business is the city ordinance regarding operating business on the lake."

      Here we go. It isn't over yet.

      "We oppose this ordinance as well. It directly affects Ms. (YLN)'s plans to open a B&B and was created to sabotage her."

      The audience starts hurriedly whispering.

      "Bang Chan is right. Marjorie has trespassed on my property to try and force me out."

      "Mayor, these claims are out of control!" Marjorie blurts out.

     "You were saying, Mr. Bang?" the mayor ushers him to continue.

      "This ordinance is bullshit. Another B&B would help tourism and the town's economy, not hurt it. Not only that, but (Y/N) has had to deal with multiple illegal intimidation attempts to get her to cease building. Additionally, the mayor tried to blackmail me with a deal to sway my council vote. I have it in writing."

      "Worst of all, Marjorie has invited Olivia's biological father, a criminal who even kidnapped her, to live with her. All of this to mess with us and try to make us back down, but we won't."

      The room erupts. The Mayor loses grip of his cool façade, slamming his hand on the table.

      "These accusations are preposterous! You have the gall to make something like this up?" the mayor asks with his brows furrowed.

      "I never did that!"

      But my mom stands up from the crowd and clears her throat.

      "I can confirm everything my daughter and her boyfriend are saying."

      "Mrs. (YLN)! You're...alive...?" Shock written all over the mayors face.

      My mom is risking everything to go public and help us? She can get in a lot of trouble for faking her death.

      "I knew Olivia's father. He was a friend of my husband. They were con men together. And it's true that Marjorie brought him here and helped him harass a little girl."

      She reaches down and takes Olivia's hand.

      "My bio dad is a shithead."

      The crowd laughs nervously, but my mom grins as she squeezes Olivia's hand.

      "From the mouth of children..."

      "That doesn't make it evidence. We need cold, hard facts here!" the mayor states.
