Travis's POV

"Travis," Pat said, his tone a mixture of concern and disbelief as he looked over at me, the disappointment evident on his face, after I had just placed yet another failed English paper on the table. "How are you failing English? It's the easiest class."

"Especially with Willks," his newest girlfriend, Sarah, chimed in, her voice carrying a hint of superiority.

"She told me to get a tutor," I sighed, feeling the weight of my academic struggles settling heavily upon me, as I took a seat next to the pair. We were still waiting for the rest of the group to show up at our lunch table.

"Seems like you need one," John chimed in unexpectedly. I always forgot he was there; he was the quiet one of the group, content to simply follow us around, chiming in every few days if we were lucky. Despite his quiet nature, he was a nice guy.

"I'm fine," I sighed, trying to convince both myself and my friends that everything was under control, even though deep down, I knew it wasn't.

I was a steady B-C student, but English was a different story; I was a solid D student, maybe even an F student at this point, but I refused to actually check. It wasn't for lack of trying, though. I did all the homework, completed all the readings, and even stayed up late studying—a habit I could usually get away with not doing for all my other classes.

"It doesn't look like it, bro. You're gonna get kicked off the team if you don't fix this; the coach already warned you," Pat said, taking a nonchalant bite of his food.

"You know what? I'll see you later," I muttered, feeling the weight of their disappointment pressing down on me as I stood up and walked away.

As I left the lunch hall, I passed the rest of the team coming into the cafeteria. I nodded at them as I walked past and headed towards the other side of the school,

Taylor's POV

"I think that is an important thing though; I don't think anything in writing is coincidental," I said, showing a highlighted passage along with a page of detailed notes to Miss Wilkes.

Miss Wilkes had been my English teacher since freshman year. The only time I didn't have her was for a single semester in sophomore year. Now, she was my AP Literature and AP Language teacher. She also happened to be the person I had lunch with almost every day, along with my one real friend, Abigail. As much as she didn't care about English or reading, she had nowhere else to go, so we stuck together.

"I think sometimes authors can write something..." Miss Wilkes began, but was interrupted by a knock on the open door. I turned my head at the same time as Abigail, who had been doing her Math homework next to me.

"Sorry to interrupt," said Travis. I wasn't sure of his name, but I knew he was one of the football players. It was almost impossible to avoid them, and everyone knew them.

"That's fine, Travis. If you've come to try and get me to re-grade your paper, though, I will ask you to turn around and get out of my classroom because it is not happening," Miss Wilkes said, looking up from the notes I had given her.
