(Part one, August 6th, Monday, 7:25am, my house)
Since I was born, my father wasn't around much. Often disappearing in the morning and coming back super late at night. Then when I was about 3, my dad left and never came back. Since I was little, I didn't know him well at the time. Mom says he was a handsome man who loved his family. Yeah, I can tell🙄. Even now, I still don't care that he abandoned us. I have my mom and that's enough for me. Besides, she said he had a good reason. Anyway, mom introduced me to greek mythology when I was young. It was so fascinating how every God was unique and had backstory. Take Athena for example: Olympian goddess of wisdom and War and turned Arachne into a spider (little harsh). Or Zeus, the god of the sky. He's a little too... arrogant. But my favorite God of all is Poseidon. One of the big three and the 12 Olympians. He controls the waves! Who wouldn't think that's cool? Ever since then I've had an interest in the myths of the gods.
This morning I was reading "The song of Achilles" while eating a biscuit when Mom casually said " You know what tomorrow is right"? My mind went blank. Last I checked, no holidays have passed. Then I went to birthdays. I hadn't talked to my friends, Samantha and Blake, since September 28th. I was pretty sure it wasn't their birthdays..... was I turning 13 already? "My birthday"? I guessed. "Ding Ding Ding", Mom said. I felt exhilarated. When I was young my mom told me that on my 13th birthday I would get the only
gift my dad ever gave me. The only thing he left behind. The gift might reveal who my dad really is. I deserve to know. Before I could ponder over this more, the bus passed my house. I was late! I grab my backpack and skateboard and dashed out of the house. I rode on the skateboard like I was crowd surfing.( this actually happened one time in California. Don't ask.) I got the skateboard when I was 9 and have been riding it ever since. It has a few scratches around the edges from turns. Because when I was first using it I had trouble turning and uh... Staying on the board. The bus was already ahead of me by a block. I was going to be late. Again.
I have a bad track record of coming late to school. I somehow manage to always be late, sometimes even when I don't ride the bus. But I'm on the bus like, 85% of the time. Well, more like 75%. The teachers take pity on us bus students though, since the bus driver is a recovering alcoholic.( we're lucky we were on a bus, hes not exactly the best driver. One time he almost got his drivers license revoked, but at least It's harder to crash a bus than a car). I decided it was no use trying to catch the bus now. So I went to my shortcut I like to call "The Detour". There were a few sharp turns, but got me to school faster than the bus. As I walked to my locker, I thought about who I was going to invite to my birthday party. My class of course; friends Tom, Andrew, Isabella, and Isaac, best friends Samantha and Blake, and my friend Minecraft gamers. So, in total, 30 people. I was inviting 30 people to my party. And mom didn't seem to mind; she was excited when I
told her who I want to invite. She had the " I'm so glad you have friends look". I pushed past a crowd of students in opened Sam's Locker. She is also a fan of greek mythology. I put the invitation in her locker. I hope she comes, I thought. I walk past 8 lockers until I reach Blake's. Blake likes Greek mythology, but he also love sports.(He says it's a very close second). I put his invitation next to a picture of a baseball player. If he doesn't come who will spill the fruit punch on them self? I thought. Sam and Blake weren't there for science, math, English, or any other classes. It got me suspicious, because they've been gone for a while. Are they.. hiding something? I talked to my friends about this. "I saw them last on September 30th", Tom said. "I saw them near an alley, discussing your birthday a week ago", Isabella said. We gave her odd looks. What kind of answer is that? "On the plus side, they will probably come to the party", Isaac offered. Isaac always found the bright side of things. I appreciated that. When it was time for bed, I drifted off to sleep, a sense of dread filling me. Something will go wrong. It has to.
Everything went great so far. Everyone came, including late arrivers soon bike. They seemed anxious though, as if they want to tell me something. Then we open the cake, and they seem to relax after that. I got a new sturdier, faster looking skateboard from Isaac. "Maybe now you will get to school on time", Isaac said. The Minecraft Gamers gave me special weapons for survival mode. I thanked them awkwardly. What are the gamers, Logan, knew every type of Minecraft character. It made me a little jealous. I got tickets to a Billie Eilish concert from Tom and Isabella. "You're watching the whole thing" Isabella said. "She is not joking", Tom
whispere I gulped. Isabel was one of those diehard fans, unlike me, who wasn't a diehard fan for any singer. Andrew got me a $40 Amazon gift card. I threw in a smile, though I would've enjoyed something more.. Sentimental than a gift card I would finish in 2 weeks. "I'm not good at giving presents", Andrew admitted. I tried not to project pity, since he normally did not enjoy that. "He forgot my birthday and didn't get me anything", Tom complained. "I said I was sorry", Andrew said. "No you didn't"! Tom protested. Tom looked like he was about to shove Andrew when I say got in the way. "Guys! It's Alyssa's birthday and you're fighting?" Isaac said loudly. Everyone gaped. Isabella rolled her eyes. Boys. So aggressive sometimes. I saw a hidden present in the hallway. I grabbed it silently and tore it open. The nametag read "Sam". The gift was a shield that showed Poseidon standing broadly on the waves, his trident gleaming. His hair moved swiftly in the wind, like a holographic image. It had a bunch of Greek inscriptions I didn't understand. I glanced at Sam. She simply nodded and walked away. She acts like she is covered by a cloak of darkness sometimes, but from the presents she gets you, you can tell she cares and knows what you like. Mom whispered "Come over here". I walked up to her and she showed me into my room. There was a present on the bed label "Dad" . I tore it open anxiously. It was Poseidon signature weapon, a trident. I couldn't believe my eyes."Your dad was Poseidon", Mom said darkly. "You must be kidding" I said logically. The trident was so bright it could light up the world. Then the centaurs came in and attacked everyone. The end.
