Chapter3

Why is life so cruel? Can’t God let me stay away from all the drama in the world? And the most important question, why do all ghastly things happen to me?

She met my grandma and then shook hands with me; I could feel the sparks on the skin that she touched, and I hope she felt it too. I kept my eyes to the floor and followed my grandma to the dining room.

Her mom, Mrs. Preston hugged me tightly, and Mr. Preston just shook my hand and smiled at me. I still didn’t know her name, and I needed to know.

‘So, Carter, you must me be in Iris’ grade right?’ Mrs. Prestion asked politley. So, that’s her name; Iris. What a pretty name.

‘Yes,’ I replied meekly.

‘Are you friends, Iris?’ She directed her question to Iris.

‘Umm…well, we haven’t really met- ,’ before she could finish, her mom spoke, ‘Okay, so go upstairs and get to know each other.’

Shock was evident in her eys and mne too. I looked at grandma, who gave me an encouraging look. I had no other choice when she stood from her seat. I simply followed her up the stairs but I couldn’t help stare at her back-side. How could some be so perfect?

When I entered her room, I was surprised; the walls were black with white patterns on them, it looked extremely ‘emo’. It was nearly like mine. I just wished I could see her again.

‘You’re room’s really awesome.’ I stated.

‘Thanks, but I think my parents nagging isn’t worth my room’s décor,’ she chuckled slightly at the end.

She sat on her bed and I took the bean bag in front of her. I saw her checking me out when  I turned around to get the bean bag; I began to believe I was hot.

She stared into my eyes and I knew why; I simply ignored and looked down. She got the jist and looked away. I know I’m a freak but you don’t have to remind me every now and then.

‘So, what hobbies do you have?’ I asked.

‘Well, I do karate, and I sketch.’

‘Weird combination, eh?’

She smiled and said, ‘Yeah.’

‘What about you? What do you do?’ she asked.

‘I don’t have that many friends, so I have a spot in the forest where I do kung fu.’ Why was I telling her this? I never told anyone stuff like this.

‘Awesome, can you show me sometimes?’

‘Sure, why not?’ What the hell is your problem, Carter? You can’t take her there. That’s YOUR place! And just YOURS!

I blocked the noisy, annoying voice in the back of my mind and carried on talking to her. We simply talked about general topics, and nothing more. I wanted to know more about her.

It wasn’t until my Grandma called for me, that we went downstairs. We bid farewell with a promise to meet again.

But the most horrifying questions stilled lingered in my mind. Would she talk to me in school? Would she avoide me because of my freakish appearance? I hoped for the best and slept peacefully with a smile on my face.

The Next Day…

I was woken up by a very troubled looking Grandma. I could see that she hadn’t slept; her eyes were rimmed with red lines and very droopy.

‘What happened?’ I asked, my level of anxiousness increasing by the passing second.

‘They need you, I can’t say much but, here’s your ticket to India, you’ll meet another Titium and you’ll go to Alpha, he needs you.’

I knew what she was saying, but first I had to give in my leave application and if by any chance, say good bye to Iris.

Getting ready in fifteen minutes, I hurried to the school. Walking rapidly towards the principal’s office, I bumped into Nick.

‘Where you going, bro?’ he questioned, feeling my anxiety.

‘Family emaergancy, I don’t think I’ll be back beforea few weeks,’ with that I ran off towards the office.

I handed the application to the secretary and ran off to fing Iris. Sensing her smell on the first floor, I skipped a few stairs to that place. I knew she was with a few friends in the room ahead of me.

Before going in I decided to catch my breath and smooth out my hair a little. I could here giggling from inside the room and finally a voice.

‘I heard, that blonde boy came to your house last night,’ one of them asked.

‘Yeah, he’s pretty cool,’ Iris replied.

‘But have you seen his hair and those crimson eyes; he looks like a total freak.’

‘Yeah, he does look like a freak…’

I didn’t hear the rest of her words and turned around.

Freak…

Freak..

Freak..

The word swirled around in my mind.

Didn’t I deserve to be happy? Was I seriously born to be the fuel of all gossip? Couldn’t I just be normal for once? Do you know what it feels like to be called all those names and especially by someone you thought who was different?

Maybe I am  born to be criticised…
