Chapter 7

 

After Carter found out that Iris had been in the same field as his dream, he began to panic and ran as fast as he could to Iris’ place.

Knock, knock!

I waited patiently for someone to answer the door. Fidgeting with my fingers was the only way to release my nervousness.

The door opened after a few minutes and Mr. Preston stood firm in front of me.

‘What can I do for you, mister?’ questioned Iris’ father, curiously.

‘Um...well, I’m-’ he didn’t let me finish.

‘You know I can’t read your mind, so you might as well tell me what you came here for.’

‘Um...I came here to see Iris.’

‘And how do you know Iris?’

‘Ah-’

Before I could utter any words, Mrs. Preston interrupted our intense conversation.

‘Aren’t you Zelda’s son?’ she asked.

‘Yes, I am,’ I replied.

‘Why didn’t you say so, kid?’ Mr. Preston added with a chuckle and smiled nervously.

‘Um...well, can I meet Iris?’ I asked.

‘Oh sure, honey, you can go right up to her room,’ Mrs. Preston said with googly eyes that said, ‘Oh, they look so cute together.’ Both of them moved aside and I followed up the stairs, through the narrow corridor to her room.

I knocked the room before entering, acting like a gentleman. She was sitting on her desk, in all her beauty, her head wedged inside a book. I knew she was so engrossed in the book that she didn’t hear me come in.

I decided to look at her, while I could, taking in every intricate line on her forehead, the way her eyebrows crunched. Her eyes were kind of swollen and were rimmed red. She didn’t have defined cheek bones, but her chubby cheeks added to her innocence. Her nose wasn’t shaped like a button but was straight and firm. And ah, those lips, those thin, luscious lips made me go into frenzy. Just when I had finished checking her out she shuddered from the cold that came in with the open door, in which I was currently standing.

Her orbs reached mine and they doubled in size from the shock of me being there.

‘Um, hey,’ I said, trying to take her out of the trance in which she was in.

‘Um, yeah, hi, how are you?’ she replied in a few moments.

‘I’m fine, I just came to meet you. If you hadn’t noticed I didn’t come to school for a few day, I was in India.’

‘I did notice. But why did you go to India?’

‘Oh, I had to meet some of my cousins. It was sort of a reunion thing. I just came here to see you,’ I added sheepishly.

‘Um, thanks. Come sit down,’ she gestured for me to come and sit on the bed.

I sat on the corner of the bed and she sat on the other corner. It was really awkward and there was so much tension that I could cut through the air with a knife. But soon she eased the tension a little bit. She got up and dragged the chair she was sitting on in front of me.

‘So, tell me why you’re here because I know that not the only reason why you’re here,’ she asked a little more relaxed.

‘Well, to tell you the truth, I was a little worried you might have forgotten about me, so I came over to see if you had or not,’ I answered with a chuckle.

‘Well, to tell you the truth, I actually forgot about you. By the way, what was your name again?’ she teased me and it made me feel good.

‘Well, let’s start over! Ahem, ahem. Hello Miss Preston, my name is Carter, Carter McCaine.’ I uttered the last word in a ‘gentlemen’ way, making her giggle. I extended my hand and she took it firmly, shaking it.

‘My name is Iris, Iris Preston. What else would you like to know about me?’

‘Miss, would you give me the pleasure of taking you out on a date?’ WTF, why the hell did you say that Carter? Are you dumb? Are you stupid? Or do you just want to get rejected and make a fool out of yourself? Ignoring the words my brain shot at me repeatedly, I looked into her eyes, searching for an answer.

‘Um, sure, why not?’ the words that came out of her mouth made my stomach do flips out of happiness.

She smiled and said, ‘You came here to ask me this?’

I just nodded. I knew I was lying. I went to check if she was okay but this was just a surprise for me and her.

‘Um, I should get going, Zelda might be worried. I didn’t even tell her I was going to her house.’ I told her and headed for the door but she got my hand before I could leave.

‘Can’t you have dinner with us?’ her innocent tone and those puppy dog eyes made my heart melt and I had to oblige.

‘But, you can’t tell them about you going out with me, okay?’ I laid down my condition which was accepted with a slight nod of the head.

The dinner was awesome and for once I felt like I was a part of a family. I knew Zelda would worry about me, but it was worth it.

After the dinner I left to my house. Tonight was a great night and I’d love to live it forever.

Iris’ POV

 

What did you do?

Those four words circled inside my mind.

How could I do this? Put his life in danger? I am a bitch for doing this. But being with him is just all so wonderful and I’d give anything to be happy with him. And you know the irony in this situation? Carter came to check if I was okay. How could I be okay? I was born to be bullied and... you know I’d rather die than face all of this. To me, it seems like the best option.

But...

My past always affects my future. I have no control over it. If only Carter was strong enough to beat Blake. The only happiness I have in my life is Carter and I’m jeopardizing his life. How could I be so selfish?

I was lying in my bed staring at the ceiling when I heard my bedroom door open. I knew who it was so I didn’t need to look. A tear fell from my eyes but I wiped it away. I couldn’t change what was fate. If fate wanted me to be tortured, what could I do?

I just sat there waiting for what was to come; the torturing, the beating, the raping. And it came.
