Chapter 12
Carter’s POV
The thought of Iris lying in a hospital bed, wearing a hospital gown had yet to wrap itself around my head. Before I could go see her, I had to drop Alena at her house.
‘Get on the bike,’ I ordered sternly to her.
‘Okay,’ she replied before getting on.
The ride to her house seemed like a blur to me. She instructed me towards her house and I followed the instruction like a robot. Her hold on my waist didn’t bother me like it should have; but, I guess, I had issues swirling around in my brain.
We reached her house. It was two storey house with a small yet maintained garden and a white picket fence, like you usually see in the movies. She asked me for my phone number and i dictated it to her as she typed it in her phone.
Before leaving she gave me a kiss on the cheek and said, ‘Tell me if you need anything. And please keep me updated on how Iris is.’
I simply nodded and started my bike. I drove to the hospital thinking of what I’ll do to the ass hole that hurt Iris. I parked my bike and entered the hospital. After asking for Iris’ room number, I strode on my long legs to her room. I didn’t have the confidence to enter, so I waited outside and listened to the voices inside the room.
‘What are we going to do now?’ a manly voice said.
‘She won’t even see him and he just left. He looked really angry,’ a meek voice replied.
‘I don’t know how we’ll get rid of him. We tried each and everything in our power to get away from him but he just won’t stop.’
I didn’t know who they were talking about but I was sure he was the reason for the distress in Iris’ family. I couldn’t stand the thought of her being scared and heartbroken. I summoned the courage inside me and knocked on the door.
Mr. Preston answered the door. He was surprised to see me, but he hid it well.
‘What are you doing here son? Aren’t you supposed to be at school?’ he interrogated. I got a feeling that he was trying to get rid of me, but I wasn’t leaving Iris alone, not anymore.
‘Well, yes. But I was worried about Iris and I had to check if she was okay,’ I replied.
‘Sure, we’ll leave you two alone then,’ said Mrs. Preston and grabbed her husband’s arm and led him outside.
After getting rid of them, I got the chance to take in Iris’ appearance. She looked flabbergasted and I know why. She probably thought that after seeing her with that guy, I wouldn’t want to see her. But the truth is whatever she does or whoever she is with, I’ll always try to be there for her.
She had blue and purple bruises all over her skin, well, the part of skin that was visible. She had a busted lip and a bandage wrapped over her abdomen. I had a guess what happened. I clenched my fists on thinking what might have happened.
‘Hi,’ she said meekly. How she could be so calm right now was beyond me.
‘Um, hi. I hope you’re okay,’ I managed to force the words out of my mouth. I was no longer angry, but I was nervous. Well, being round her made me nervous. Who could blame me? She looked stunning even in a hospital gown.
‘I am now,’ she muttered under her breath. I wasn’t supposed to hear it but my supernatural hearing gave me an advantage.
‘Um, about last night...’ she began to explain.
‘Um, you don’t have to tell me. It’s not my business.’
‘But I do. You deserve an explanation. So please let me explain.’
I had been standing until then. I took a chair and dragged it near her bed. I was expecting a speech which consisted of something on the lines of ‘I like you but as a friend and I hope we stay friends.’
But what she said baffled me.
‘I like you. And not just like a friend, but more. I haven’t had the chance to tell you. I know I’m not the prettiest or the most amazing girl you’ll meet,’ I opened my mouth to object but she stopped me. ‘Let me say everything I have to, and then you can reply. Okay so where was I? Oh yeah...I’m not that pretty. I’m broken and my life is a piece of crap. I’m not normal and I have a lot of issues and I know that with um, your looks, you could get anyone you want but I just want you to give me a chance. And about that day at the restaurant, it’s a long story. But all I’m going to say is that it was against my will. I wanted so badly to run into your arms and tell you that I’m sorry but I couldn’t.’
Tears had cascaded down her face till she was done explaining. I got up from the chair and sat beside her on the bed. I wiped her tears. She was looking down, so I held her chin and moved it upwards so she could look me in the eyes. Her eyes were watery and her face was flushed.
No words came to my mind because all I could see were her luscious lips. Before she could move her face, I caught her lips with mine. Our lips moved in sync. Her bruise scratched against my lips and made the kiss even more irresistible.
She had to catch her breath, so I let go. Titiums had much more tolerance for lack of oxygen than humans but we still needed it. A slight blushed rose up to her cheeks. It was so damn cute.
‘Did you get your answer?’ I asked, hoping she did.
She just nodded with her head low, as if trying to hide her face from view but I could see the billion dollar smile that had made its way onto her lips.
When I chuckled at her, she looked up looking like a tomato. I didn’t expect her to be so shy. She never had been. She was always distant and lonely but now it looked as if she was just brought back to life. Was it because of me? My insides burst in butterflies. I didn’t know it was possible and especially for guys.
Just then Mr and Mrs. Preston came in with coffee cups in their hands. I didn’t want to annoy them anymore. I walked over to Iris and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
‘I like you too,’ I whispered in her ear before leaving.
Iris’ POV
I told him. Yes, I did it. And Blake wasn’t here to ruin the moment but I couldn’t rely on him not coming back. I knew he would but I couldn’t let Carter in my mess of a life. He deserved better. But then the kiss...
I felt like I was on top of the world. I was scared that he’d stop if he felt the rough skin on my lips but that didn’t happen. I couldn’t help but fall for him more. And then when he whispered in a husky tone in my ear, it was just out of this world.
He had left a few minutes ago and my parents had been eyeing my since he left.
Out of frustration, I shouted, ‘What? Why are you looking at me like that?’
‘Nope, nothing. We were just wondering about... well, when he um, kissed your cheek,’ my mother stuttered. The real cause for her stuttering was that she knew I was in a bad mood since Blake’s appearance and didn’t want me to blow up.
‘So? Is it a crime to be kissed on the cheek?!’ I shrieked.
‘No, no, we were just wondering,’ this time my father replied.
‘Well, then don’t wonder. I want to sleep now,’ I grumbled. They understood the hidden meaning in my words and left the room.
I felt bad for treating them like that but I was the one who had been beaten and raped. I was the one who was forced to act like Blake’s personal bitch, they weren’t. So they didn’t know my pain.
I didn’t want to think more about it. I was getting a head ache so I started to reply my kiss with Carter in my mind to relax and it worked effectively. Within fifteen minutes, I was asleep.
