"Be careful of the wolves!!" Mother calls from the door step as I am walking a few steps ahead of her.
"I know mother." I say, walking away with a skip in my step. "Go to grandmothers and straight back! No talking to strangers, no wondering off the path! And if I see a wolf I run." I say at the same time as mother. I know these lines off my heart as I have been hearing them since I was young, I know then off by heart. I am 12 years now older then the first time I have heard the se warning words about the old woods not far from front yard. I hear mother close our heavy wooden door. I close our front gate and skip slightly on the uneven path way to dear old granny.
The tress are so old and tall the lines in the bark and the circles in the trunks show in the stumps of the trees fallen or cut down. They tell the stories, they tell secrets that the trees have been exposed to. Only those who listen, those to take time and press their ear closely to the tree can the music they make and the whispers of stories and truths.
I take my time walking listening to the music the whole woods make together. I let it fill my ears and tickle my soul. I even let my body dance as I slowly move my way to granny.
A sudden howl tears me way from the music. I freeze my breath stuck in my throat. There's small howl that follows. I listen, I have heard many howls in my life, this one is different. I take steps to the edge of path near where I heard the howling. A small whimpering type howls come from the bushes. It's weak and small. It makes my heart feel heavy. I lean closer to the bushes, then from a far I hear louder stronger howls from wolves. Sounds from a pack, the whimpers and howls coming from bushes near me sound alone and in need of help. I take a deep breath my heart rattling in my chest, I ignore all warnings my mother has told me and I step off the path.
