With deft and practiced movements, Isabel meticulously blended the assortment of herbs before proceeding to pulverize them into a fine powder within the confines of her mortar and pestle. Asif, meanwhile, mirrored Isabel's actions, the air in the cramped workspace thick with silence as they both focused intently on their respective tasks.

As days had passed, the two physicians persisted, but an unspoken tension lingered, exacerbated by the elderly man's deliberate avoidance of idle chatter. Each interaction with Isabel was marked by his brusque and acerbic remarks, fostering an atmosphere of discomfort in their shared workspace.

Isabel's curiosity nibbled persistently at her, aching to unravel the mystery behind the man's behavior towards her. However, beneath that inquisitive surface, a pang of hurt lingered, stemming from Asif's failure to afford her the mutual respect she felt she deserved. Despite pouring her heart and soul into her work each day, his demeanor towards her remained distant and cold, leaving her feeling undervalued.

"Why?" Isabel spoke up, prompting Asif's diligent hands to pause in their work.

"What do you mean, 'why'?" he retorted in his usual manner.

"Why do you treat me like this?" Isabel's voice held a mixture of frustration and hurt as she talked. "Ever since I've been at the palace, it feels like all I've received from you is criticism and hostility. I've been working hard, trying to contribute, but it seems like nothing I do is good enough for you." Honest words spilled from her lips.

"Why? You know why?" Asif's brow furrowed as he turned to face Isabel. "I've worked diligently to ascend to my current position. The path hasn't been easy, and not everyone I've encountered has been supportive. Do you see these books?" He gestured towards the shelves.

"They represent years of hard work and dedication. And now, do you think you can just come in and take my place?" He paused, frustration evident in his tone. "I've earned this position through hard work, and it's difficult for me to believe that you just waltz in here, trying to take my place." Asif's expression softened slightly as he finished speaking, a glimmer of vulnerability flickering in his eyes.

Isabel's eyes widened in surprise as she absorbed the depth of Asif's sentiments. As he concluded, she felt a wave of empathy wash over her, mingled with a sense of admiration for his resilience. Leaning back against the table, Isabel let out a heavy sigh, discovering a newfound understanding of Asif's perspective.

"You misunderstand my intentions." Isabel spoke, her voice soft yet filled with steadfast sincerity. "I'm here to assist and learn. It's not my intention to take your place or undermine what you've achieved. I deeply respect the years and sacrifices you've made to attain your position."
Isabel continued, her words carrying a genuine warmth.

Asif pondered Isabel's words for a moment, his expression softening as he considered her sincerity. The weight of his initial skepticism began to ease, replaced by a flicker of cautious optimism. He recognized the genuine desire in Isabel's voice, and a part of him felt reassured.

"The sole objective I aim for is the restoration of our king's health." Isabel's voice resonated. "I've been told much about him, his virtues, his leadership. If there's anyone deserving of a prolonged and prosperous life, it's him." She continued. "Our kingdom's stability hinges on his well-being, and I'll devote every effort to aid in his recovery." Once again, Asif found himself contemplating, weighing Isabel's genuine intentions against the backdrop of her unwavering determination.

He sensed the sincerity in her words, recognizing that her commitment stemmed not from mere ambition, but from a genuine desire to serve their king and their kingdom. With each passing moment, his initial reservations began to wane, replaced by a growing sense of respect for Isabel's character and dedication.

"I deeply appreciate your dedication. Now that we have clarity on each other's intentions, our dynamic may indeed evolve." Asif started, his tone thoughtful yet measured. "However, don't expect me to immediately embrace your presence based solely on this." Isabel nodded in acknowledgment, recognizing the complexity of their situation and the need for patience in building and earning Asif's trust.

"Very well." Isabel affirmed with a nod, a subtle yet confident smile gracing her lips. Extending her hand towards Asif, she offered it as a gesture of mutual respect and understanding, which he then shook.

As the hours slipped away, Isabel and Asif remained engrossed in their tasks even as the sun dipped below the horizon. As the end of their workday approached, Asif bid farewell and departed. Left alone in the quietude of the workspace, Isabel took a moment to gather her thoughts before turning her attention to her next task: the evening care of the king.

"Saladin has dangerously encroached upon our borders." William remarked, his tone laced with concern, as he stood by the king's side, his gaze scanning the evening activity in the courtyard and the city beyond.

"Saladin simply seeks to test my patience." the King remarked, his words tinged with a calm resolve born of years of experience and diplomacy. "But patience, tempered with prudence, is a virtue that has served us well in times of adversity. Let us not be swayed by impulsive reactions, but rather let us remain steadfast in our commitment to uphold the principles of justice and peace." Baldwin declared, his tone measured as he surveyed the city.

William nodded in agreement with the king's words. Despite his young age, Baldwin possessed wisdom and resolve, qualities that William greatly admired. He found himself in awe of his ability to navigate the complexities of rulership with grace and foresight.

"Isabel." William spoke the name as Baldwin turned his gaze towards him, a silent query in his eyes.

"What about her?" the king inquired, his tone tinged with a mixture of interest as he turned his full attention to William.

"True, I haven't conversed with her much during her time here, but her dedication to heal you is genuine." said William, his tone reflective. "I don't mean to disparage, but don't dismiss her from your presence. As I've said, her intentions are genuine." finished William.

Baldwin turned forward, his gaze fixed on the horizon, his expression hidden behind the mask he wore. Yet, despite the concealment, a subtle warmth emanated from his demeanor.

"She.." Baldwin paused, deliberating on his words. "It's uncommon for someone to address me so forthrightly." he mused, turning to William. "One might expect a person of her angelic stature to recoil in fear upon encountering me." he recalled her face, referring to the girl. "Yet, she did not." Baldwin said, prompting a gentle smile from William at his words.

Before William could utter a word, the chamber door swung open, drawing both men's attention. Upon seeing the mentioned person, the king swallowed, as Isabel approached them, clutching a medical tray between her small, delicate hands.
