We'll get to be seeing Link in this chapter! Yay! And to think that I was going to make a massive extra chapter for the temple. Now that I think about it, that would have just become empty words for the most part. And the story would have taken a right ol' stop in motion. And I would get bored (lol).
Also, normally I update weekly or bi-weekly, and I ended up finishing this in a week and a day. 5000+ words in that time. Holy heck. So I could not just wait to update this next week. I'm also being a renegade and briefly skimming over instead of properly checking this, so I better grammar-check it later, haha-
Hope you enjoy this one!
You smiled sheepishly. "I-I'm back. Good seeing y-you again, Great Deku Tree." Your frantic breathing slowed down your words, making them come out in a frenzied tangle of almost-gibberish.
Before your rubbery arms could cause the hero to fall ungracefully onto the grassy earth, you lay him down to give your arms a break from carrying him and the countless number of his supplies. Half of them were jars containing bugs. You had no idea the hero of Hyrule was an avid bug collector.
"So you are. In one piece are we?" You raised your glance in return to see the tired smile of the colossal tree. "Clearly, you are the one I learned of, and it makes me able to... rest my roots a little better, if you so wish to call it," as the Deku Tree spoke, you saw more of the wilting flowers and browning leaves flutter limply to the ground, besieging the soil with rot.
You winced when you looked upon the small statues of the koroks once more. "Isn't there a way to restore the forest? And free the koroks from the miasma?" You asked warily, feeling quite humbled by having a large and very ancient tree stare at you deeply while you spoke.
"Of course. If you would allow me to say, I believe it is a rather simple fix."
You couldn't help but raise an eyebrow in scepticism. But so much of the forest is dying. And the miasma is everywhere - not to mention the hordes of monsters all 'round.
"The master sword." The oak stated, and you snapped your head quickly as if you had just been struck by a bolt from the blue.
"...huh?"
"The legendary sword-"
"Yeah - the blade of evil's bane and all - but... what's that got to do with anything?" You glanced back at the resting Link, the glowing sword beside him.
The Deku Tree only smiled. "You would be surprised that the blessings of Hylia can be used for much more than just fighting. Try returning it to its resting place," the face shifted towards the sword.
Hesitantly, you edged closer to the master sword, bending down to pick it up. It emitted a soft but comforting glow when you moved your hand nearer, making it clear that it was blessed by the goddesses themselves. You gingerly picked it up, feeling the cool metal hilt heavy but strong in your hand.
"Are you sure I can do this? I mean... I'm not the actual wielder of the sword or anything," you questioned, aware of the nature of the blade's loyalty.
"I think that the fact that you are holding the bane of evil is plenty proof enough. You may not be able to use its true power, but the blade will never repel anyone with a pure heart."
After the wisened tree finished, you stepped towards the stone pedestal, plunging the sword into its place of rest. Immediately, you felt a strong burst of strangely familiar golden energy, and the forest instantly began to put itself together again.
The miasma burst into nothingness as the trees healed and displayed bright green leaves, the stench of death and misery seeping away. The blackened grass regrew itself, sprouting from the soil around colourful flowers - some glowing in the shade the larger trees cast.
