"I mean a- uh- yeah A Meta! Of course I am! Unless you're uh, talking about like a meta meta , in which case I am not!-" It's hard to read the expression clocked on Jon's face, mouth pulled into a line and brows furrowed as Danny desperately tries to simultaneously backtrack on what he's said, as well as neither confirm nor deny the question.
Now, Danny wasn't completely clueless, don't get him wrong, he remembered pretty much as soon as he said it that a couple of the girls on the bus had mentioned the word in relation to someone. What that meant exactly, he's completely lost on, especially in both cases it seemed to be something to keep on the down-low, first with the girls and now with Jon here dragging him into an ally (suspicious) just to ask him about it.
Luck seemed to be at least a bit on his side today, though, as Jon's expression melts into something more like an easy grin after a beat of silence.
"Oh! Right, I guess if you aren't really from around here you might not be uh, up to date!" Jon says, clapping his hands together with a smile.
"A meta, or Metahuman is a person with, well, special abilities or I guess you could describe them as superpowers ."
Huh.
Huh?????
Danny knows it's probably rude to just stand there with his mouth gapping open, but can you blame him? People here can have superpowers, like normal, born-with-em, non-lab-related-clowning-incidents related superpowers.
And it was (somewhat at least) normal???
Talk about a way to make his own universe look lame.
"Where did you say you were from again?" Shit, Danny took too long with his internal crisis and now Jon's looking at him with a kinda intense look on his face. Better save this somehow, Fenton, just work off what you know that you know exists in this world!
"Uh, well kinda out in the middle of nowhere, y'know! Just a couple hours from here! Really small town though, mostly just fields and stuff, barely any neighbors other than... Cows?" Yeah that sounds about right, even if it does paint him as some farmboy (despite a lack of an accent and the fact he's wearing city clothes). It seems to be enough for Jon though, who practically lights up at the response.
"Oh yeah! Of course, that makes perfect sense if you weren't really local so don't worry dude I don't blame you for being from out of town ." Jon says, waving a hand again as he talks. Danny's a bit confused at the random word emphasis though, it feels almost like Jon's trying to have some kind of weird double meaning to what he's saying?
"Right, but here, people with abilities, or Metahumans or whatever, are they allowed-?" Danny's still trying to parse out this whole superpower business, if people exist like that, he's more surprised he hasn't seen it yet, and the say Jon's been all quiet about them makes him think he might end up in trouble yet for flaunting any of his powers.
"Oh, no metas are completely protected under the law, so you wouldn't have to worry too much about that, I mean on the Justice League alone there's-" Danny feels a bit relieved as Jon talks, another point for this world being a bit better than his if he wouldn't have to worry about the government as much. Jon's cut off from finishing his thought about a "Justice League" (Nerdy name, he's taking the point back), when he's interrupted by something over Danny's shoulder, back to where they entered from.
"Oh hey Dami!" Oh right, his doppelganger or whatever. Turning around, Danny spots the other teen (Also notably younger than the rest of the teens on the trip by the way, they're probably the same age or something, Danny thinks that they're probably the same height, other than that they really don't look very similar.) Stands at the entrance to the ally, blocking the entrance like he expects one of them to run or something. Danny sees him roll his eyes when Jon approaches him with a grin.
