[ ONE YEAR LATER - 2007 ]

"COUNTED SHEEP!" YOU EXCLAIMED, SUMMONING a large sheep. you smiled proudly. "i've been working on bettering my technique! i think it's finally paying off!" you looked towards suguru, who leaned against a wall. you gave a confused look as you made the sheep disappear and approached him. "suguru~!"

he looked at you. "ah..sorry, n/n. i'm just a bit fatigued from the sun" he told you, pulling you into a hug. "let's go inside then. maybe some water could help" you suggested as suguru nodded. you grabbed his hand and lead him inside of jujutsu high.

the four of you had began to do solo missions more often. it was rare for you to be paired up with shoko and even rarer to be paired with satoru or suguru. however, these solo missions gave you a boost of confidence, since you could say that you defeated the curses by yourself.

you held a water bottle out to suguru. he took it, a tired smile on his face. "thanks" he spoke as you took a seat next to him. suguru drank the water, sighing. "..n/n, i have a question for you..give me your honest answer" he said, sounding almost hesitant to say anything in the first place. "i'll be as honest as i can! what's the question?" you replied, curious.

"don't you ever think that..this is pointless? risking our lives almost constantly?" suguru queried. "if you mean being a sorcerer, i find it far from pointless. we protect those who can't protect themselves. it's our whole thing" you spoke. "but we've lost multiple sorcerers doing it. we could've lost satoru if he hadn't managed to use the reverse technique. don't you think that's a sign to stop?"

"if i'm killed during a mission, i would die knowing that i did some good for the world. even if i'm forgotten when i die, i still feel that goodness in my soul, ya know?" you replied.

suguru expected that kind of answer from you. you were someone who always tried to help, even when nobody needed it. he loved you for it. however, you're also naive. you were ignorant to danger and blinded by being a knight in shining armor. when you aren't able to help, you would break down and put the blame on yourself, similar to how you were during last year's mission.

"maybe if curses stopped popping up, then sorcerers wouldn't be needed" you told him. "..right" suguru muttered. had he continued on with the topic, it would've led to a heated argument about morals.

you both sat in silence, thinking over the question. it was simple; it was the answer that was complicated..

"so you're really mastering your technique, hm?" you spoke, holding the phone to your ear as you made your way through the crowds of people.

suguru and shoko had gone on their respective missions about a day ago, leaving you and satoru. you took the chance to visit your parents, who lived in shinjuku.

"yeah. i hear you're doing the same. soon you'll be stronger than me!"

you chuckled. "impossible..there's no way. suguru and shoko, maybe. but i know that's never gonna happen for me" you replied.

"whaaaaat? there's no way you think that. you underestimate yourself too much, n/n!"

"my technique only has one actual attack, satoru. the rest are distractions and defensive things" you explained.

"defensive is still useful! hear me out with this one: we become a crime fighting duo. i'm the super strong and mega handsome offensive while you're the super cool and equally strong defensive?"

you laughed. "not everything you said is even the truth!"

"you ARE super cool though!"

"nah, i mean the 'mega handsome' part" you joked. you heard satoru let out a dramatic gasp.

"ugh! you wound me!"

some background talking could be heard on satoru's end.

"ah, sorry, n/n. yaga-sensei wants to talk to me. i'll call you back, okay? stay safe"

satoru hung up. you sighed happily as you put your phone into your pocket. you arrived at your parents' house. upon arriving, you noticed that the door was slightly ajar. you rose an eyebrow as you opened the door. "mama? papa?"

you noticed that a huge mess lay around the main area. you walked into the house, stepping over bits of glass from framed pictures. "mama? papa..?" you called out once more as you wandered about the house. you spotted two bodies laying along the kitchen floor. your eyes widened and your body froze. tears welled up in your eyes as you fell to your knees. you then began to sob.

your parents were good people, innocent people. they were great helps to the community and never got involved in conflict. while they've never been sorcerers themselves, they fully supported your dream of becoming one. they didn't even call you crazy when you told them that you could see curses.

just who could've done this? they never had any enemies. maybe a serial killer? you noticed the residuals left behind by a cursed technique. someone with a cursed technique had done it..but who? a curse user you've never heard of? most likely..

your phone rang again; it was another call from satoru. you sniffled as you answered.

"i have some news about suguru..you might not believe me, but it came straight from yaga.."

"what happened..?" you asked, wiping your tears.

satoru's face softened as he heard your breaking voice. had you just been crying? if so, what happened? he took a breath, deciding to tell you about suguru first. he began to tell you what yaga told him. the more you heard, the more shocked you became.

"i was tasked with killing him..just let me know if you see him, okay?"

you had mixed emotions. anger. sadness. disbelief. surprise. they all swirled inside of you. you hummed in response before hanging up. you take a couple breaths before making your way out of the house. it felt like another weight had been added to your shoulders, one that you couldn't bear to carry.

you walked through the sidewalks of shinjuku, searching for suguru. you needed answers, badly.

"yo, n/n!"

you stopped in your tracks, turning towards the voice. suguru stood six feet away from you, a sweet smile on his face as he waved. you looked as if you'd seen a ghost.

you wanted to yell at him. you wanted to hit him. you wanted to question him. but you couldn't bring yourself to do so. your body wouldn't let you. after a few brief moments, you realized why.

you were terrified of your boyfriend.
