The robot introduced himself as Ultron; an accidental creation of Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, insistant that his existence would save the world. They had their own plan, of course. The Avengers always seem to have some sort of 'righteous, save-the-world' plot that ends up getting people killed. But maybe this time is different...maybe Ultron really will be their undoing.
Or he'll just be a worse version of what we have now...its too early to tell.
"What are you exactly?" I asked, as we made our way through the abandoned halls of the Strucker compound.
"What is anyone really?" Ultron replied, looking down at me. "An idea, a dream...a glimmer in their mother's eye."
"Don't patronize me," I shot back, "I'm asking about the science behind you. You're a sentient robot, that doesn't just happen on its own."
He glanced down at me, his eyes growing red.
"Has anyone ever told you have a bit of an attitude problem?" He asked.I held his gaze, unphased by the menacing monotone of his voice. He sighed...if that's even possible. "In part, I am the Ultron program. I was designed by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner to be an AI defense system, capable of analyzing current and potential extraterrestrial threats to the planet and engaging them before they can do any real damage. But if you're asking me about my sentience, I was derived from one of Tony Stark's Artificial Intelligence programs, the entirety of the internet, and the unencrptyed code from within Loki's scepter."
"There's code inside the scepter?" I asked. "But how is that possible? I mean, the Scepter is extremely complex alien technology, the likes of which even Strucker's best scientists hadn't even scratched the surface of. And Tony Stark and Bruce Banner just reversed-engineered it in a matter of days? How would they even decompile the data? I mean, is there even a disassembled or Hex editor that has the protocol for that?"
Ultron turned around to look at Wanda and Pietro.
"Does she often talk like this?" He asked.
"Oh yeah," Pietro replied, "She's a kid genius. Eidetic memory, crazy high IQ. It's the only reason they agreed to let her into the experiements. They wanted to see how the scepter would interact with her natural intelligence."
"Hmm."
I turned around to face my brother.
"You don't need to clarify the 'kid' part." I said, narrowing my eyes at him.
"Just trying to keep you humble." He retorted, smirking at me.
Ultron led the way into one of the main labs, which was where Strucker housed all of his reclaimed Chitari technology from the attack on New York City. I was surprised to see that the place was already overrun with smaller robots, and they were already working to take things apart and put them back together again.
"We'll move out right away," He told us, "This is a start, but there's something we need to begin the real work."
"Yes, only you haven't really clarified what that is," I pointed out, "We know you want Wanda to get into the Avenger's heads at...some point, but that's really all you've told us."
"Patience, young one," Ultron said, "All will be revealed in time."
"And all of these are..." Wanda trailed off, gesturing to the other robots.
