Madeleine didn't die. His mom, thank divines, stopped the bleeding and the shot wasn't fatal. He was in a coma for about a month, and a few days later he was up and ready.

The doctor knocked on the doorway to let Madeleine know she was there. "You have a visitor." She said. But Madeleine's family had already left for the day, who could it be?

"Oh, who is it?" Madeleine asked.

The nurse stepped inside, and so did Espresso. He was holding some flowers and a teddy bear that was holding a 'get well soon' card. His glasses were held together by tape and glue, he looked miserable and depressed.

Madeleine's face turned expressionless with silent anger. He sighed and stressedly ran his fingers through his hair. "What do you want?"

Espresso deeply exhaled and walked more into the room "To apologize, and potentially start fresh."

"That's hilarious coming from you."

"Seriously this time." Espresso handed Madeleine the bear and set the flowers aside. Then, he sat and took Madeleine's hand in his. "I truly am sorry."

Madeleine didn't seem amused.

"I understand if you don't believe me, but I just wanted to get it out there."

Madeleine thought for a moment. The apology seemed genuine, but now he was known to lie, what gives?

Espresso's grasp on Madeleine's hand tightened from hurt. And Madeleine made his decision.

"I..." He sighed, his face relaxing from its' tensed position. "Accept your apology. I think I overreacted, I admit that. We all have our flaws, I suppose?"

Espresso smiled. "I suppose. I think the reason was because I..." He bit his lip nervously.

Madeleine waited.

"Like you. L-Love you even. I'm clearly not good at expressing it, that's for sure." Espresso chuckled softly and gazed into Madeleine's eyes.

"No shit." Madeleine blushed. He had always felt that way, but was scared to admit it. So, he masked his feelings behind the excuse of just being closeted. But, he wasn't. He had already told his family, and they were proud of him for it.

Espresso didn't have a family to know. But, he was still fine. He dealt with it, and now he lifted the weight of his shoulders at last. And he did that for both of them.

"I love you too."

A month later, everything was back to normal. Madeleine had gone through his physical therapy, and was promptly discharged. The problem was: they both blatantly didn't know what they were considered to be. Were they friends? Dating? It was never made clear.

Then, the question about families was brought up. Madeleine's family. It had been nearing Thanksgiving, and Grand Madeleine had invited Espresso over for it.

"Do you want to come over for it?" Madeleine asked one evening while staying with the mage.

"I uhm..." Espresso didn't know how to answer.

"C'mon! My mom makes really good mashed potatoes." He smiled.

"This brings me to my own question. What do you consider us?"

Madeleine shrugged. "I don't really know."

"Me neither."

The room fell silent. Sure, they needed to know before Espresso had been introduced to his family. He'd be a stranger to them; and there couldn't be miscommunication. What if they weren't together? Then his family would think that they are.

All of the sudden, Madeleine pulled him close, their faces inches apart. It took Espresso by surprise of course, making him yelp and struggle to steady himself. He managed to stay upright and stared into Madeleine's limitless blue eyes.

"What do you want to be known as?" Madeleine whispered, his voice deep and enticing.

Espresso froze, his face dark with blush. Madeleine then placed a soft kiss on his lips, sliding his other hand down to meet his new lover's waist. They stayed there for a moment, both enjoying the long awaited moment. When they separated, Espresso opened his eyes back up, but he was more relaxed.

"Whatever you want me to be."

Madeleine laughed quietly to himself. "I suppose we should start rehearsing our lines then, darling? We shouldn't have a proper introduction without practice. How does 'Everyone, this is my new boyfriend and world-renown mage, Espresso Cookie' sound?"

Espresso smiled and kissed him again. When they separated, they kept their foreheads together. "I think we should just be ourselves. No one likes sugar-coatings for things that are best kept bitter, hm?"

"I suppose."
