A different companionship

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight."

-1 Peter 3:3-4

When Cain made a declaration that he would face any and all obstacles.....he wasn't expecting a horde of women cooing at Charlemagne.

He's currently at the edge of Kentucky close to Tennessee, with two angels on his trail he wanted to get as far away from Indiana as possible (No hate to the state, lovely place, he really enjoyed the Butterscotch pies).

It seemed like it was a cool day in Kentucky and he needed more clothes for the kid. So he went to the best baby clothes store he could find. Unfortunately the store has a ton of women walking around looking as well for their own kids or as a present for other parents.

So when they saw (what they assumed) a single father with his baby looking for clothes and other supplies the single (and some married) mothers jumped at the opportunity to introduce themselves.

And what better way to coo at said baby.

"What a cute baby!" Ahh yes. Compliment the child first then go for the daddy.

"What's his name?" An obvious question to start conversation.

"Charlemagne Daystar. You can call him Charlie for short, but I prefer Charlemagne." Cain said in a calm polite manner. He didn't have time for this, he's on the run from both Haven and Hell.

"Oh wow! What a kingly name!" Well yes, that name did belong to a king after all.

"So where's the mother?" A question that can be more or less translated to 'Are you single?'

Cain didn't consider himself an attractive man. As a matter of fact he is considered the ugliest of his family. Heck he was considered the ugliest being in both Heaven and Hell.

These ladies must be desperate he concluded.

"She died, murder. Violently ripped apart by a lunatic."

There was an awkward silence filling the store.

"I-im so sorry."

"It's fine she's in a better place now." He prayed. Cain pushed past the stunned silent mothers and paid for his stuff and left.

"A mother huh?......I wonder what yours was like Charlemagne."

Charlie gurgled what Cain thinks is a response to his question.

"Though me....a father. No. I wasted that opportunity a long time ago...." Can reminisced. With both wives he had children, and with both he never cared for them at all. It's not like he hates himself either. He did at one point, but he corrected himself.

For if you do not love yourself, how can you change for the better? How can you love the people who love you for you? How can you treat your neighbor the way you treat yourself, if you want to destroy yourself?

So no. Cain did not hate himself, he could only disapprove his past actions, accept them and the man he once was, and become a better man.

Even though he knows he could never be with another woman again, he yearned for companionship.

Not one of lovers but one of partners. Someone to share knowledge of ones likes or dislikes, activities or hobbies, things what friends would do.

But Cain knew that would never happen. No demon would ever do that, Haven shared no love for him, and his and his brother's descendants would consider him a crazy man. And he's already caused them so much pain, who was he to think they would ever want to enter a friendship with him.
