Her eyes groggily opening, Jane slowly registers the glowing light is the amber tint of the sun peeking through blinds, and not the tunnel lights she last saw.
She gradually comes to, her eyes moving around her. She feels stiff, and in a dull pain. As her gaze passes over a white wall, across a sliding glass door, sink with towel dispenser over it, her ears join in, hearing a rhythmic beeping that pulls her focus up and to the side.
She's in the hospital, there's no mistaking it. The room is familiar enough to her, a sight she's seen a few times in her life when matches haven't gone her way.
She rolls a little, trying to readjust herself, and is hit by a sharp pain in her stomach. Her hand resting over it, she settles back down, eyeing Warren coming in. spotting her eyes open and trademark scowl, Warren grins. "Jay!" He slides the door shut behind him. "You're awake!" He rounds the bed , setting down a vase of flowers on the table.
"What happened?"
Hearing the tone of drugs in her voice, meant to keep the pain at bay, Warren tells gently, "There was a bank robbery, and you were shot." It starts coming back to her as she grunts, rolling her head in her hair. "The surgery took a couple hours." He chuckles meekly, "The doctor said you're pretty tough. I told him he had no clue."
Frustrated, she says, "Dad."
"I called him."
"What?!" Jane barks from her gut, hurting it.
"I called Brad too, but he's out of town. He said he was going to get on the road soon as he can to come home."
"Shit," She moves in the bed. "Where's my phone?"
Lying atop the counter along the wall with her other things in a tub, Warren finds it, handing it off her to her. "Battery's low, I'll get you a charging cord from the gift shop."
She grabs it from him, irked at his responsible measures to notify loved ones. "Now I have to run crowd control." She starts calling.
Picked up on the second ring, a man's voice spouts anxiously on the other end. "Jay?! Oh thank God!"
"Brad, I'm okay.." Jane starts talking her brother down, "It's not that big of a deal, Warren's just being dramatic." Warren glares, his jaw dropping. "No, I'm fine, it was just wrong place wrong time, no big deal."
"You almost died!" Warren growls, making her cover her phone.
"Shut the fuck up!" she orders through grit teeth. "Oh yeah," She continues with Brad, her tone again laid back. "Warren's just sitting here, crying." The mentor balls his fists. "No, don't come back! Gwen's wanted to take this trip since forever. Both of you keep doing what your doing." She brushes him off. "Look, I gotta call Dad now, Warren whined to him too."
