Lucy Cares

I jump off of Lilac, one of the nicest non speaking horses in Narnia, and then lead her in to the stalls. Once she's settled in, I pat her on the back and give her a carrot. I must admit, I didn't think taking care of a non speaking horse was going to be this much fun. But Peter wanted me to do it. Ever since we've had good relations with the neighboring countries, they've given us loads of gifts to maintain the peace, including these non speaking horses. Of course Peter was too kind and too much of a diplomat to say no. Now it is my job to train them so they aren't completely useless and will be good in battle. Not that there are ever any battles nowadays, but still. Why not be prepared? Besides, I love riding horses.

"Wow, you're really good with animals," says Jenny, my little assistant in training. I must admit, I like having someone younger who looks up to me and hears what I have to say as if there is nothing more important in the world. As the youngest, I am accustomed to this being the other way around, and I am usually the one who looks up to my siblings. Of course, it does get annoying when they try to protect information from me, so I make sure to never do that with Jenny.

"Miss Lucy?"

I blink. "Oh, yes! Thank you, Jenny. You really are too kind."

"Thanks! Is there, um, anything else you'd like me to do?"

"Yes. Once you comb Nightlock's mane and finish giving Red Nose a bath, you are free to lock up for today or to take Lilac out and have a ride yourself."

She flushes with excitement. "Oh, yes, Miss Lucy! Thank you ever so much! And I'll make sure to be extra careful with Red Nose so she doesn't kick me like last time."

And with that she zooms off, eager to finish everything so she can go out for a ride.

I smile at her cheerful nature. I am glad that soon, once she's done training and learning everything there is to know, she will be in charge of the stables. I really couldn't give the spot to a better, more dedicated person. She's clearly in love with the horses, and that is the most important thing.

Just as I'm brushing straw off my dress, a certain familiar voice creeps up on me.

"Will!" I scream.

He laughs at my surprise. He's really quite honestly like a 3rd, annoying brother to me.

"You scared me!" But I laugh too, because it's impossible to stay mad at Will for too long. He's too good-natured and friendly.

"Hey, Lucy Lu, what are you up to?"

"Nothing that involves danger or excitement, for now. And how about you?"

"Looking for that wonderful sister of yours. She seems to spend all her time with that Caspian fellow."

"That Caspian fellow is her ex boyfriend, so if you have a crush on my sister you better watch out."

"And how do you know I have a crush in your sister?"

"Oh, please. I've seen it a million times. The suitors that come to ask my sister for a hand in marriage or are interested in her have a certain expression. Certain faraway eyes, jealousy at the mention of anyone else's name next to Susan's..."

Will laughs. "It's called love. It can happen to anyone. In my case Cupid hit my heartstrings for Susan, but you will someday experience this too."

I shrug. "I live to serve Aslan. That is my first priority. If any men find their way to my heart, at the right time, then I might consider marriage. But right now it seems like I'm here to serve Aslan and kingdom, so no distractions for me."

"Distractions? Is that how you think of it? Lucy Lu, a man is more than just a distraction. When you find the right one, you'll know, and from then on it will seem even more important than any business in the kingdom, although never more important than Aslan."

I scoff. "Tell that to Peter. He's got dozens of princesses at his feet and wouldn't marry a single one if it meant leaving the kingdom."

'Well, then the King hasn't found the right one. And neither have you."

I giggle. "Gee, Will, since when are you the love expert? You're very romantic theses days."

He sighs. "Since love hit me over the head hard. Do you want to give the love advice now? What does your sister like in a guy?"

I shake my head. "Nope. I like Caspian. Besides, all's fair in love and war. Plus, you have to leave now. Did you forget you have a job?"

He stands up straighter. "No, no, of course not. But mark my words, Lucy. Someday you will care."

And with that Will gets on his horse and gallops away from the stables.

As he's leaving, I can't help but let a sigh escape from my mouth.

"I do care! I do! But no one except family and Aslan seems to notice. Why can't I be more like Susan?"
