astrid pov

i'm dreaming and i know i am, but for some reason i can't wake up even as i am running for my life. the world is dark but i can hear my enemy behind me taking deep breaths savoring my scent. i can hear them laughing in short bursts as they get closer. aurelia is running in front of me her curly hair tangled with sticks and small rocks in it. she never once looked back as a scream leaves my mouth and my ankle gets caught in a hand.

"wake up astrid, wake up baby, come back to me" i hear the chanting as i'm pulled under and swallowed whole by my enemies who want nothing more for this to be the real world. in my dreams is the only time they have access to my mind because i can't be awake to guard it. with a final laugh they let go of my mind, i sit up gasping for air as aurelia rubs my back in comfort.

"i'm sorry i couldn't wake up i hope i didn't scare you" lia just sucks her teeth and rolls her eyes "i know baby you didn't scare me, ill start looking at spells to ward off our minds because this is getting out of hand we can't even sleep anymore" i huff out one last breathe before nodding.

she wasn't wrong we slept in shifts so we could guard the other and lead them back to the real world if our enemies are able to do more then just dream damage. the sleeping in shifts isn't fun but ill do whatever it takes to keep lia safe. "i'm okay now but we should move they might have been able to get a read on where we are now" aurelia just points behind herself at our things already packed up.

i smile and lean up to kiss her, she's only a few inches taller then me but she doesn't seem to mind meeting me half way. "i love you lia they won't take you from me" aurelia nods and holds the back of my neck so that we were leaning against each other with our foreheads touching. "i would burn the world down if they touched you astrid" she said her breathe a little winded from our kiss. she grabs an outfit for me to change into before grabbing our bags and motel room keys and heading out to pack the car.

we didn't have much to travel with but what we did have was enough besides the areas we travel to always have some supernatural shops. some humans also let us shop in their shops if we don't cause a problem for them, most humans hate us though. while we don't have the normal bearings of a supernatural person, our beauty and aura gives us away. "baby you ready" lia asks after slipping back into the room, "yes let me just get rid of these clothes" fire lights at my finger tips and sets the previous clothing ablaze.

scent is one of our biggest markers in the supernatural world, we could find anyone or anything that way, and fear is one of the most pungent scents. putting the burning clothes into the fireplace i stepped back and watched as the fire grew hotter and brighter before finally settling down. looking over to aurelia "okay now i'm ready" she reached her hand over to me and i grabbed it, following her lead to wherever she parked the car.

saying a spell to mask our scents in the daytime works wonders for us. anyone tracking us couldn't possibly be able to figure out where we are or where we're going. looking around the area i notice more things then i did at night. there are multiple shops around sort of like an outside mall, casting out my mind like a net i can sense everyone and everything for a few miles.

there are many supernatural beings, many from different species with a little more digging into their minds i can tell they are the ordinary ones. i've felt the difference between a powerful being and an ordinary one. the only people with powers or a skill come from great houses and families, mostly royal blood will produce a gift in a being. that's why aurelia and i are being hunted, because what we can do isn't natural even to the supernatural. we don't come from royal blood or great houses our moms were average humans before they died our dads were humans too.
