aurelia's pov

astrid's body went slack next to me, and i pulled the car off the road into a parking lot not caring about who saw us, i remembered the shock on the men's faces when astrid made the car invisible but i couldn't move, it was like my whole body froze and my mind begged me to get out of the car and lay myself out flat, my neck to the side in a submissive pose. pulling astrid's body more towards me i grabbed a tissue and wiped at her nose cleaning her up, pushing her curly hair away from her face i grabbed a clip to pull it all back for her, her face twitching under my touch.

even in her sleep my baby knew i was here and would watch out for her, kissing her forehead i put her back into her seat and laid the seat down a little and put her seatbelt on. i pulled back onto the road trying to forget about the 6 men that stood across from the lot, the look in the darker skinned duo's eyes told me everything and nothing all at once. his soul was intact but different and i couldn't put my finger on it, like it was only half of a soul but that didn't make sense at least to me. since i didn't have much knowledge of the supernatural world i suppose it was natural for his kind. astrid is into the reading and learning the brain to my brawn.

i turned the radio back on and just kept up with traffic not worrying about the other cars knowing that if i drove like everyone else we would be okay. my stomach was eating itself and i suddenly remembered the food in the bag but i wouldn't eat without astrid, so i just pulled out some oreos and snacked on them. humming to myself i finished my oreos and held my baby's hand in mine as i drove us to safety. unsure how much distance i needed to put between myself and these men i just kept driving checking in with astrid every 30 minutes to make sure she was still breathing.

she woke up a few hours later with a gasp, her breathing heavy as sweat gathered on her forehead. i turned down the air conditioner so it was 66 degrees in the car and put it on a medium blast hoping to at least cool her down a bit. "are you okay pretty girl im really so sorry." i said glancing over at her and then pulling into a rest stop, "it's okay baby i felt the same things you did" she said after a few deep breaths. i shook my head as my eyes filled with tears "i should've done more astrid" i said looking at her pulling her hands into mine.

"it's okay really i froze the same way in the store, my side started tingling and i just knew my nose confirmed it for sure though" astrid said looking down and biting her lip. i nodded my head "yea my side started tingling to when i was pumping gas i thought i was just getting more hungry" i said to which astrid let out a little snort. "i know the feeling, you know what they are to us don't you" she asked looking me in the eyes this time. i just nodded "yea our mates" i said my voice low.

"yea, we have to keep running and keep our scents in check even more now we can't drag them into this, we can barley keep each other safe let alone 6 more people" astrid said. it stung a little bit but she wasn't wrong, sleeping in shifts wasn't fun always running and being on the road, having to do the most extreme shit to make money this wasn't the life i planned to have with astrid but i knew i couldn't keep it up with 6 more people either.

i nodded my head slowly, "your right baby now that i've seen them and smelt them i won't have the same reaction if we ever run into them again" i said leaning over to kiss her forehead and whispering affirmations into her hair. "side note i didn't even know i could change the appearance of the car, or make us invisible i just knew we needed to be safe and unseen" she said awe present in her voice.

"i'm so proud of you pretty girl" i said smiling getting back into position to drive again. she beamed at my praise before pulling her seat up and grabbing a snack, "how long have we been driving, and how long was i out" she asked cheeto dust on her fingers. "we haven't been driving long a few hours at most you've been passed out for the same amount of time." the time in between passing out after using a new power was getting shorter for us both.
