Song for this chap - My own home by Darleen Carr
This wasn't new to Utahime. She had done it for years just like she had told Shoko that very afternoon. However, Utahime could sense that something was amiss.
Maybe she forgot to tie her pants properly. Maybe her hair was all wrong. Maybe she forgot to bring one of the sacred objects needed for the ceremony. Maybe she should have had lunch. Maybe she should step down as the priestess and let someone else take her place.
Even, with all these thoughts she continued. The ritual had become a muscle memory for her. The trick now was to put off the thoughts about the actual possession part. Her body seemed to physically flinch at the thought of the possession. But, it was her job; she was gifted with this ability and she was going to see it carry through to the end.
Slowly she unraveled one sacred object after another. She had hidden them under her sleeves. She took them and danced around. The altar where she performed was set at least 20 meters above the ground so that everyone in the shrine could get a clear view. You can't fuck this up Utahime she told herself.
The clouds were gathering and the Utahime knew she was on the right path. She offered herself up with dance and song while completely separating herself from any worldly thoughts or feelings. But before she did that her eyes swept up to where Shoko would probably be standing.
For a second, she couldn't believe herself. White hair, blindfold pulled up, smirk on his face Gojo was standing next to Shoko.
What is he doing here? Utahime couldn't believe her eyes. Maybe she was seeing things. Of course she was. She did her best to not remember Gojo but he incessantly called her every week to tell her weird facts or just to tell her which baseball team won. As if she wasn't capable of knowing about the baseball stats herself.
That's why she hated Gojo even more in that minute. All those times he had called her just to irritate her and waste her time, but today he was standing in the crowd watching her perform and he didn't have the courtesy of dropping even an email - telling her he would come.
What good would it be? Utahime asked herself. I would have dreaded this ritual even more. Unnecessary pressure, not wanting to screw it in front of Gojo. Giving him reasons to call and torture her in the future. Her mind told her it was for the best but her heart was beating fast at the thought of Gojo watching her perform.
She wanted to stop performing. She felt like his Geiko and less like a Miko then. She turned away instead and closed her eyes. But, she couldn't focus anymore no matter how hard she tried. Her thoughts were all about Gojo. At least Shoko could have warned me, Utahime thou-
Utahime stopped dancing and the music stopped too. Her legs weren't hers. The same went for the rest of her body. It was happening, she was being possessed. Her body grew lighter and she was hovering above the altar, her Miko costume flowing behind her. Her eyes were fully opened and glowed as they moved around the crowd.
Everyone had pure awe written on their faces. Just then, Utahime felt her life thread entwine with something else. An unknowable presence. It touched her from within and Utahime spoke. She spoke in a voice, not her own but deeper and smooth.
"Crops will have good yield this year. It will be a lucky year for the secondborns. Merchants can also expect good turnovers. Friends will become lovers, and marriages will yield children" the voice said. The scribes who sat a few levels below the altar took notes of the oracle.
The God in Utahime's body paused for a second and scanned the entire crowd for a second time. Its eyes landed on Gojo's, and Utahime's body physically shrunk back.
The crowd gasped and murmurs passed around. Is God scared of that white-haired man? They asked each other.
Utahime was suddenly overcome with feelings of something. Although the God was still in possession, Utahime could feel some things. Right now, she was feeling something but just a sliver, and she wanted to end the possession more than anything.
Meanwhile, the God possessing Utahime projected her hands over the people and power came out in streaks of green. The green streaks turned into seeds that fell into ground. "This year I will punish thieves and murderers according to my liking." the voice said.
Then, the God did something unexpected. Utahime could feel her limbs bending as if to bow down. The God was praying but to whom? Utahime finally understood what the sliver meant. It was fear. If Utahime could just feel a sliver then the God probably felt it a hundred times more.
Overwhelming power of who? Utahime was suddenly in the mind of God and she didn't realise that she had mentally shut close her eyes so she slowly opened them. She saw a pair of angry blue eyes staring down on the God as she was still looking through the eyes of God. Utahime immediately closed her eyes. What the fuck was that?
This brought an end to the possession and the God un-entwined itself from Utahime's life thread and left her body.
Utahime stopped hovering and fell unconscious. The next thing she could remember was the same pair of blue eyes peering at her but instead of anger, there was only concern. The possessions always depleted her cursed energy and concern was what she needed at that moment. She let herself fall back into the mini coma that she usually experienced after the Ritual.
