charles did take harley home that night, and when he did - it was quiet. she seemed like she regretted the whole thing and just wanted to go back to the time where she would sit in her room, alone, staring at her ceiling.
charles didn't know what to say, he glanced over every time she opened her mouth, but just to watch her close it again - turning to the window.
his music was on low, and once he pulled to a stop at the deluca residence, he unlocked the car, watching as she left. "thanks." she uttered, sending a forced smile and he just gave a nod.
"anytime." he spoke bluntly, hoping harley didn't take that lightly, because oh, did he mean it.
she shut the door gently, made her way inside and from there she went straight to her room.
that night when charles got home, he was greeted by the beautiful view of his parents in the kitchen, bickering per usual.
he'd never seen such an unhappy couple, and honestly maybe that's why he was the way he was.
he exited his car quietly, going around the back and climbing up to make it to his room window. once he made it in, he shut it closed, exhaling and fixing his hair. he overheard the mutters of his parents downstairs, and eventually tuned out the sounds of their dissatisfaction with his headphones, and the recollection of his night.
his night - apart from seeing her in discomfort - was good. it was better than his usual nights, stuck on the phone, or in his living room with a family like his.
he hadn't been with someone so genuine in a long while.
and now, he was refreshed.
. . .
6th period, the monday back from break - charles strolled in and he took a seat in his usual spot beside harley, she was still quiet and he was still annoying to her, but still - he spoke up.
"find anything else?"
harley shifted in her seat, in the quiet classroom she whispered back. "lucas green is a dick, and i'm very much focused on finding him."
"lucas green graduated." charles enlightened, a small hint of disappointment in his voice. the sight of harley's defeated look, her sinking down in her seat caused him to lean over once again.
"but maybe we can find him, small town." he reminded, his voice raspy as he popped a gum into his mouth, now looking away from her and to the board.
so when he wasn't with ronnie, charles lennon walked extra ways in the hallways, just to pass harley - who was always at her locker, always facing it.
this particular time, she wasn't - and with time he found her making her way to the football
field, where he attempted to catch up to her."do you.." he froze a bit when she looked back - taking a notice to him, and he hated that feeling. he then cleared his throat, shaking his head and fixing his posture, his tone changing into one of boredom. "do you need the key?"
"i'm okay." harley gave these two words and continued to walk, and while charles could've left it at that - he didn't.
"i have it."
it took a few seconds for harley to stop, and turn - she rolled her eyes a bit, causing charles to deadpan until she waved him over.
and he walked up to her, fixing his backpack and glancing around at anyone who'd been staring at the two. he studied harley's grip on her bag, and watched as she stared at the football room, making their way to it.
and from there, they snuck in.
it continued on like that, harley would look for something new every day and he was there helping her - getting her into the football locker room, classroom, equipment room - and lots more.
in return, she gave him the answers in 6th period, and he took them every day.
the last day that charles escorted harley was the day he took her to the classroom. he knocked before taking them in, shutting the door behind them and it was quiet as she went through the records, searching for lucas - though in the midst of it, the door shot open - revealing none other than ronnie.
"are you fucking kidding me?" she spoke, seething almost. her eyes glanced from charles to harley, and harley stood up, awkwardly standing there as charles sighed, taking his backpack now.
"what, ronnie?" he spoke softly, and ronnie responded - her eyes stuck on harley who subconsciously fixed her shirt.
"what the fuck are you doing around so much? charles doesn't like helping you, you know that right?"
"ronnie." charles spoke firmly, but she didn't care - because she hated harley more than anything, especially now.
"what?" harley questioned, she gave a quick glance to charles who attempted to stop ronnie from talking any more.
"didn't you just tell me on the phone last night? that you're tired of it? of her?" ronnie asked, laughing a bit in disbelief and harley was waiting for him to deny that so they could move on, but he never did.
all he did was urge ronnie to stop, and as she kept going and going, harley grabbed her stuff.
"i don't need you to help me anymore." harley spoke under her breath, but he heard. he watched as she left and his mouth opened to protest but all he had seen was ronnie and her look, expecting him to keep quiet as she left.
"you're crazy." he spoke, staring down at ronnie who now took his hand.
"i'm crazy? you have been around her too much." ronnie spoke, leading them both out.
as for harley, she was disappointed in the situation, yes, but she was extremely disappointed in herself, for even allowing charles to get so close. for letting him help her.
because he didn't matter, and now he knew stuff that people who don't matter shouldn't know.
