A/N:
Sorry this chapter is a day late, I conked out early last night.😂
For a couple weeks the two of them lived in this strange domestic bliss. Toji never really left Nyoko's apartment (except for work), and Nyoko didn't ask him to leave. She liked his company, she liked how comfortable he made her feel, how natural it felt to be with him.
But for the whole time a certain thought had been gnawing at Nyoko. And she didn't have the strength to ask him until their perfect week was over.
"So where is Megumi?" Nyoko asked slowly and cautiously. The two walked hand in hand. It was snowing again, but that didn't bother either of them.
Toji stopped walking and stared down at her. "What do you mean?"
"Well, you've been living at my apartment for a while now, and you haven't even once mentioned your son. I assume he doesn't live with your family, or your second wife. The only people I think he would live with is maybe his mother's family, but I would still think your son would visit or you would go see him."
Toji's gaze hardened. "I haven't seen him in months."
"Oh." Nyoko's voice was quiet. Toji began to walk again, so she followed, but they didn't hold hands again. "So who does he live with then?"
"Why do you care so much about him?" Toji snapped, even though he was trying to keep his voice calm.
"I'm only curious." She answered carefully. Her voice stayed gentle and sweet, trying to keep things civil. "I think it's cool you have a son, and I just want to know more." It was at this moment Nyoko realized that Toji was starting to walk back to her apartment.
"I don't want to talk about him." Toji's tone was short. Nyoko wanted to ask more, but she wanted to at least wait until they were in the privacy of her apartment. She had this awful feeling that her inquiring about Megumi was going to cause a fight. But they were in a relationship now, she had the right to ask.
The two walked back to her apartment in silence. Nyoko tried to reach for Toji's hand again, but he rejected her. She had never been so uncomfortable around him. The silence was deafening, it was choking them.
As soon as her apartment door opened Toji went in and began to collect his things.
"What are you doing?"
"I need to go back to my apartment." Toji informed her.
"Just because I asked about Megumi?" Nyoko asked as she crossed her arms.
"No, I have work early tomorrow."
"No you don't." Nyoko got closer to him and dropped her voice down to a whisper. "I remember you saying some pretty dirty things to me earlier. What happened to doing those things?"
Toji wanted to stay, but he knew this was a trap. She would get him to stay just so she could ask him more. He needed to leave. But if he stayed then he would get to spend another night with Nyoko, he was enjoying their time together so far. But this one conversation could ruin everything they had going on. Toji would have to be honest with her, about how he not only abandoned his son, but also sold him.
The other part of Toji wanted to tell her everything. With how empathic she was she was bound to maybe accept him still. Or would she never talk to him after this? Or would she listen and understand?
Toji closed the space between them. He dropped the bag he was holding and wrapped his arms around her. Nyoko squealed, scared from his sudden action, but she leaned into him. He pulled away from her and stared at her for a moment.
