Set place in a castle because I love the aesthetic ❤️
Inej
The unused castle window was foggy with years worth of the elements and no cleaning, it's surface gritty with dust.
Inej was clinging to the ledge of a window on one of the most famous castle in The Wandering Isle. Tall towers of stone spirals up to the sky, six of them all grappling for the highest position.
Her most dangerous feat yet. Inej pictured her fathers voice in her head and the gasps of the crowd as she clung to the cold stone. She was ten stories up, but if she fell she would land on a gabled roof only two stories down, making imminent death less probable.
Her knives were a silvery contrast to the dark night as she used one of the blades to clean the crud out of the hinges so the pane of glass slid open, squeaking like wet rubber over tile.
She pulled herself through silently, feet dropping to the carpeted floor with a soft thump.
Inej could tell by looking around the cylindrical room that it had once been private chambers. A white and deep blue canopy bed sat next to the window, broken moonlight distorting the dark wood frame.
Inej lit a candle and padded around the room looking for an exit. A chest set next to a mahogany desk, the key long gone and the contents long forgotten. Dust covered everything and Inej felt as through she was treading through someone's past, a snapshot of their life.
The door to the stairs was locked from the outside, fumbling only a little, Inej made quick work of the lock with one of Kaz's lock picks.
The downwards spiral stair seemed endless and Inej's candle flickered as she raced down them. Coming tot he halfway she had seen only on maps, Inej snuffed out the candle and made her way through the present day residential quarters.
She could hear loud snoring coming from behind a closed door, it's bronze bangle fitted with a much more complicated lock then the the one she had picked before.
She crept by it, a wraith in the night.
Several more doors were down the corridor, and Inej finally made it to the end, where a much cleaner window showed her the forest three stories below. The same forest she knew Kaz was staked out it, waiting for her to drop the rope.
Inej had climbed through the tower windows because they were the only ones that didn't have alarms when people entered. All the other windows in the immense castles had alarms when opened from the outside, but not from the inside.
It took three tries to open the window, the heavy glass resisting her pushes. Finally, it cracked open enough for her to unfurl the rope around her shoulders and tie it to the ledge. She was on alert as lookout as she waited for Kaz to join her.
When she heard his hand gripping the ledge, she turned, only for a moment.
Their eyes met as Kaz scanned over Inej's body in a way he wouldn't have done seven months ago, scanning her body for even the smallest scratch.
"Did anyone see you?" He asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Do you even have to ask?" They began walking down the hall, their shadows trailing behind in the dimly lit corridor.
"Last time-"
Inej cut him off.
"How was I supposed to know the child was following me?"
"You're the Wraith! Saints Inej, you know when I so much as look at you." He whisper screamed, his voice only loud enough for her ears.
"I swear she had cotton balls for feet."
