This is an idea I had for a longer story, but I'm not sure if it is interesting enough. So any feedback on the idea is appreciated. Of course I'd hash out the characters more if it was longer.

There was a factory in the middle of where the truffula forest once stood. It was a peaceful place until a young man with an idea came to town. He cut down a tree to collect the tufts. And in doing so brought forth the Lorax, who speaks for the trees. He was not happy about the boy's actions at all. The days he came back defeated, the Lorax actually welcomed his failure. His family didn't support him, nor did the Lorax, or even the townsfolk. For many days he went into the center of town to sell his product. He was so proud of his invention, but the townsfolk weren't. They found him quite annoying. They threw things at him and laughed him out of town everyday. Finally the boy had enough and threw away his thneed made from the tufts.

"I'm sick and tired of trying my hardest. When no one even pretends to care. I was stupid to think a thneed was anything great," he huffed.

"I think your thneed is great. And I'd like to help you out," a voice said behind him.

There stood a girl, who looked like a business type, holding his thneed between her fingers. A green striped suit jacket met her brown striped pants. She wore a tie, he had never seen a woman wearing one before. Long, black hair fell over her shoulders as she smiled. Green eyes stared at him over an ostentatious pair of bright blue sunglasses. The boy was captivated by her looks, but even more by her confidence in his thneed. He smiled at her and extended his hand.

"I'm Once-ler and you are...?" he asked.

"They call me Greedler because of my business saavy. I'm not in a contract if you want me to help you," she smirked.

"You'd really help me? That'd be great!" he exclaimed before letting his face frown, "but I have no money, there's no way I could pay you."

While he was looking down she moved quickly, as if she weren't human. Her arm wrapped around his shoulder, pulling him close to her. His eyes looked over to her nervously. There was no way she moved that fast. A crooked smile sprung across her face.

"That's great, Oncie. Do ya mind if I call ya that? I don't require payment of the monetary sorts."

She pulled a pocket watch out by the chain. It swung around her finger as they walked toward the nearby river.

"If not money, then how could I pay you?"

"I want you."

"What?" he asked completely shocked.

"You're an innocent kid. So pure, so perfect. I haven't seen a person like you in a long time. I can draw up the contract by tomorrow, if you'd like. But the only catch is no one else can have you."

"You mean like you want to be my girlfriend?"

"You're so adorable. Just say yes. I promise I'll make you and your thneed famous."

"I really think I need some time to think. I made a promise to the Lorax-" he started.

The Greedler's demeanor completely changed. Her teeth seemingly sharpened, but that might have been a trick of the light. They ground together angrily as her grip on his shoulder tightened. That little rat had got in her way before, but she wanted this young man all to herself.

"And what, pray tell, did you promise?" she snarled.

"That I wouldn't cut down anymore trees."

"I can work with that," she lied through clenched teeth, "I swear on my honor we won't do such a thing."
