A casual affair.....

...could go anywhere...

Meetings. That's all my job was anymore. Once-ler, the self-made millionaire, hired me three years ago. When the business was smaller the job was so much easier. But now I felt stressed out all the time. Travelling, late night conference calls, and all the work he was above doing. It had been two months since my last day off. I needed time off to visit my mother. She was sick and I just wanted to spend even a day with her. I had finished all the work for today when I headed to his office. There was arguing inside. I pressed my ear to the door hoping to catch a piece of the conversation.

"That's final!" his mother yelled.

"You cannot make-"

"I won't hear another word against it."

I could hear her angry stomping heading toward the door. My feet stepped back quickly making it seem as though I was just getting to the door. The door swung open as she barely looked at me.

"Talk some sense into him," she huffed.

"Er, yes ma'am."

I quickly stepped in the door to see him sitting frustratedly at his desk. The door closed softly as I carried paperwork to his desk and set it down. He looked really upset. And per usual he turned his feelings toward me.

"What do you want?" he snarled.

"Is everything okay, sir?"

"Don't patronize me. I know you were eavesdropping again."

"Guess I couldn't help myself," I joked.

"I need you to work extra hours this week. Things are happening."

"Uhm, you said I could have a few days to-"

"Don't start that crap again, ___! You work for me when I say. If you don't you're fired," he snarled.

"Sir! My mom is sick and you said-"

"Don't test me today. I will fire you."

My teeth dug into my bottom lip. I couldn't tell if I was going to cry or scream. That asinine, smug smile of his spread across his lips. If only I didn't need this job to help my mother pay her medical expenses. He knew it too. I sighed as I slammed my hands on his desk staring right at him. His blue eyes met with mine.

"Yes sir. I will be in first thing. What is so important that you need me to take away from my dying mother?" I asked.

"My engagement party," he said flatly.

"Wh-what?"

"What do you mean? Didn't you hear my mother?"

"No."

"She's having me marry some business mogul's daughter. As if I need the money. I know she just wants more money but-" he caught himself rambling, "guess it's better than marrying someone like you."

"Oh you're absolutely right, sir. I'll be leaving then."

Before he could protest I walked out of the room. I was the only one in this place who lent a sympathetic ear when he needed it. How dare he say that to me! I stormed down the stairs. His mother asked if I heard the news. I feigned a smile and nodded before leaving. I pulled out my phone and dialed my mom.

"Hey, ___, how was work?" she asked.

"Another day in paradise," I sighed, "I won't be able to come by this week."
