It was raining. It was pouring. It was thundering and storming. Jax was afraid of thunderstorms, especially when he regressed. Today was a very bad day for the rabbit to be little. He was hiding in his room to avoid the loud, boisterous thunder and bright, flashing lightning. Suddenly, the lights went out. Jax immediately quivered in terror and hid behind his box of toys. The dark always made things like thunderstorms a lot more scary.
A knock was then heard at Jax's door.
"Jax? Jax, are you okay?" Ragatha asked from the other side of the door.
"M... M-Mama?" Jax stuttered.
"Can I come in?"
"Y-yes."
Ragatha opened the door and saw that Jax was nowhere to be found. She then heard whimpering behind the toy box.
"Jax, can you come out from your hiding spot?" Ragatha asked.
"No," Jax shook his head.
"Why not?"
Thunder then crashed, causing Jax to curl up into a ball and start sobbing.
Ragatha walked over to Jax and sat next to him.
The rabbit tearfully wrapped his arms around Ragatha.
"Hey, hey, it's okay, I'm here," Ragatha comforted as she hugged Jax back. She pulled a pacifier out of a bag that she brought with her and popped it into his mouth.
"It's loud..." Jax whimpered as he suckled on the pacifier. "And dark..."
"I know, sweetie. I hate that it's loud and dark, too," Ragatha empathized as she pulled out a bag that she brought with her. "I've got something to help you."
Ragatha pulled out a pair of noise-proof headphones and placed them over Jax's ears. She then pulled out a star projector and turned it on.
Jax sniffled as he watched the stars brighten up the dark room.
"Stars pretty," Jax said, his words muffled behind the pacifier.
"Yeah, the stars are pretty," Ragatha smiled.
"Thunder not loud anymore. Thank you, Mama."
"You're welcome. Kinger made a pillow fort and he invited everyone to join him to wait out the storm. You want to go to his fort?"
Jax looked at the star projector and asked, "Can the stars come with us, Mama?"
"Of course they can," Ragatha nodded as she stood up and picked Jax up. "Come on, let's go."
The rag doll carried Jax out of his room while he held onto the star projector.
Ragatha knocked on Kinger's door as Jax continued being mesmerized by the peaceful changing colors and soft light of the projector.
Thunder crashed again, causing Jax to yelp. Even if it wasn't loud due to the headphones, the thunder still scared the poor rabbit. He hid his face on Ragatha's shoulder.
"It's okay. You're fine, sweetie. Mama's got you," Ragatha cooed as she bounced the rabbit and rubbed his back. "The thunder won't hurt you, I promise."
Kinger opened the door.
"Oh, hey, Ragatha and Jax," Kinger greeted.
"Hey, Kinger, thanks for letting us come to your fort. Poor Jax is a bit frightened by the storm," Ragatha said.
"Of course! Please come in."
After Ragatha walked into Kinger's pillow fort, Jax looked up at the rag doll with a pout on his face.
"No scared... 'm big boy," Jax grumbled.
"It's okay to be scared, Jax. Everyone does at some points in their lives. That doesn't make you any less of a big boy," Ragatha reassured.
"It doesn't?"
"Absolutely not."
Ragatha kissed Jax's forehead and rubbed his back.
"Do you want to put down the star projector so the fort will be nice and bright?" Ragatha suggested.
Jax nodded as he set the projector on the floor.
Kinger entered the fort with some books about insects.
Jax yawned and rested his head on Ragatha's shoulder. He closed his eyes and fell asleep as the royal chess piece read from his books.
Ragatha smiled as she looked down at Jax. She was glad that Jax was finally feeling calm in the midst of the treacherous thunderstorm that was happening outside.
