Theodore Soleil grew up in a loving household. He lived with his mother and his little brother, Eli. When Theo was 5 years old his mother remarried, let's just say his stepfather didn't like him very much. Every time he was kicked out of a school for one reason or the other, his stepfather would lash out on him. He was always told to try harder, to stop fighting other people. Theo just couldn't understand it because he was trying and those people always fought him first. He grew angry and bitter towards his stepfather after that, he never fully trusted him. So when his mother told his stepfather what Theo really was and her plan to get him to camp half-blood, Theo didn't trust it.
"Come on Theo! Just let me take Eli for a few hours."
"And if I don't?"
Just as his stepfather looked like he was going to lash out on him again, he froze. Instead he said, "If you can't trust me, trust your mother and go."
He knew exactly how to get Theo to listen. His stepfather found out that his weak point was his mother a few years ago. Ever since, he used it to his advantage. Theo reluctantly let his stepfather take Eli's hand. He gave a quick salute to Eli as he was dragged out of the house by his mother. Him and Eli liked to play soldier when they were younger, and Theo had a feeling he wouldn't get the chance to do so ever again. He loved Eli like no other, he looked almost exactly like Theo did, but instead Eli has lighter brown hair. So whenever Eli asked to play, he always agreed, knowing Eli wouldn't stay young forever and he should enjoy it while he still could.
"What's happening?" He asked as they sped down their cobbled pathway. It was the middle of April and the sun beat down on them. Theo always liked the sun's warmth, but he couldn't enjoy it now.
"You must trust me, Theo," his mother said with a sad, far away look in her eyes. Theo couldn't recall anytime in the last 9 years that his mother held that expression. She looked older in a way, and Theo quickly decided he hated that look.
"Why wont you just tell me?" Theo was starting to get frustrated now. He couldn't understand why no one would tell him what was happening. He was going to add onto his statement but his mom started talking first.
"Because we are in a hurry, there is no time." Now that really confused Theo, why would they have no time? Right when he was about to voice his concerns his mother cut in again.
"It will be explained to you very soon, for now we must leave for long island."
It took them two days to get there by subways, buses, trains, or really whatever they could find. It was a long trip that made him feel antsy and restless. The whole way his mother looked sickly. Her curly brown hair that fell just below her shoulders was now in shambles and her usual tan skin was pale. Every time Theo tried to say something, his mother would shake her head and say, "in time it will make sense, Theo."
It was only after he saw a man man with furry goat legs at the train station that he really started demanding answers.
"Mom, why is that man wearing a Halloween costume in April?"
That seemed to really piss off the goat man as he started waving his bat in front of Theo's face and rambling on about how rude children were these days. Theo would've laughed if he wasn't so concerned.
"Look, Theo, you are not human. At least, not fully," his mom started.
Theo's eyes widened, was his mother going insane?
"What are you talking about?" He squeaked out.
"You are half god my darling, and the things you have seen were not imaginary."
She paused and took a shaky breath as Theo just started to look even more concerned.
"The only way you'll be safe is if you go with this man to camp. Everything will be explained then."
Theo felt like he was about to cry, why was his mom abandoning him? Was he just too much? Did she say those things to scare him? His mom gave him a tight hug and whispered sweet nothings in his ear and he sobbed into her shoulder. They didn't let go until the goat man started to yell at them to hurry it up.
"I love you Theo, please survive for me, okay?"
Theo was confused, but he nodded anyways. The goat man started to drag him away as his mother waved him goodbye. Little did Theo know, that was going to be the last him he saw her, besides in his dreams. He always has that scene replaying in his head, even to this day. He should've done better, maybe she could have lived. Maybe it really was his fault.
His mother was always so kind and caring. Even though she was usually in her hospital scrubs, she was still really pretty. Her eyes had a fierce look to them and her smile never wavered. She was serious when she was needed to be, but she was silly too. She had the perfect mix of strict and kind that Theo appreciated, especially on his worst days.
He remembered the first time he was kicked out of school for defending himself against a bully. His mom gave him a lecture, but only after she knew for sure he was okay. She spent the whole day with him, baking cupcakes and playing outside. When he felt ready, he talked about his side of the story. How the bully drenched him in water and made him look like a fool. It was embarrassing to say the least, so Theo fought back and pushed him. But, unfortunately there was a teacher there that time to witness it, so he got in trouble while the other kid got away. His mother listened with such fierce eyes he thought she would burn a hole in him. He was nervous she would get angry and ground him, but his mother just nodded and thanked him for telling the truth. He was going to miss her and really hoped she made a cookie or two for when he could see her again.
Camp was fun but hard to get used to, but he guessed it was better than being constantly lectured by his stepdad. He learned the goat man that took him to camp was a Satyr by the name of Gleeson Hedge. He also learned he was extremely good with a bow, which raised a few eyebrows from the other campers. He hit a bullseye every single time and he had such quickness to it he could shoot at least 4 arrows every 5 seconds.
The campers started to guess who his godly parent was. The big three were out of the question almost immediately because he didn't attract many monsters on the way to camp. Campers argued that he should be a Hermes kid with his messy black curls and mischievous eyes. But other campers argued his bow skills were too good to be Hermes, which offended the Hermes cabin, so he should be an Apollo kid. But while they argued, Theo didn't really care, all he wanted was to go see his mom and little brother and tell them all about Camp Half-blood.
Months passed before he could go back home, he caught every train there as fast as possible. Although he kind of regretted going home after what his stepdad said to him.
"It's your fault Theodore!"
He has seen Clarisse when she was mad, she was a daughter of Ares. So when he saw his step dad he just knew he had an uncanny resemblance to Ares, the god of war, in that moment. His eyes looked like they were burning with pure rage and hatred. Yeah, It hurt a little bit, but he cared a little more about his little brother. But, when his eyes met Eli's they had almost the same look as his stepdads.
Ouch.
What a great way to go home.
He decided to go back to camp immediately after that, catching a train straight to Camp Half-blood. But unlike last time, he had no reason to go back home. Eli and his dad hated his guts and his mother was gone forever.
