The left tunnel ended up being a dead end. They sprinted at least a hundred yards, then ran into an enormous boulder that blocked the path. Meanwhile, behind them, the sound of dragging footsteps and heavy breathing graced his ears. Something, noticed how he didn't say someone, was right on their asses.
"Tyson," Percy said, "Can you-"
"Yes!" Tyson said while he slammed his shoulder against the rock so hard the tunnel shook. Theo covered his head so the small pieces of loose rubble from the ceiling didn't knock him out.
"Hurry!" Grover said. "Don't bring the roof down, but hurry!"
The boulder finally rolled away with a high pitched grinding sound, like nails on a chalkboard. Tyson pushed it into a smaller room and they ran into it without hesitation.
"We need to close the entrance!" Theo said.
They all got on one side of the boulder and pushed as hard as they could. Whatever was chasing them wailed in frustration as they pushed the rock back into place.
"We trapped it," Percy said.
"No shit sherlock," Theo said sarcastically as Grover said, "Or trapped ourselves."
Theo took the chance to look around the room. It looked to be a twenty-foot-square room and the opposite wall was covered with metal bars, like a jail cell.
"I think we just imprisoned ourselves," Theo said with a hint of frustration.
"What in Hades?" Annabeth was tugging on the bars, but they didn't want to budge. Through the bars, Theo noticed rows of cells in a ring around a dark courtyard.
"Theo's right, it's definitely a prison," Percy said. "Maybe Tyson can break-"
He was cut off by Grover shushing him, "Listen."
Above them, they heard sobbing echoing through the prison. But, underneath that, there was another voice, it was raspy and it reminded him of what he always imagined the Oracle sounded like. It was muttering something no one could make out and it sent alarm signals off in his head.
"What's that language?" Percy whispered.
Theo saw Tyson's eye widen as he said, "Can't be."
"Here we go again. . ." Theo mumbled as he prepared for some bad news.
"What?" Percy asked.
Tyson grabbed two bars that kept us in and bent them, just wide enough for a cyclops to fit through.
"Wait!" Grover called.
Tyson didn't wait. They had to run after him through the dark prison.
"I know this place," Annabeth said. "This is Alcatraz."
"You mean that island near San Francisco?" Percy asked.
She nodded. "My school took a field trip here. It's like a museum."
"A very creepy museum," Theo added.
They kept going a few more paces before Grover spoke. "Freeze," He warned.
Tyson kept going, resulting in Theo and Grover grabbing his arm and yanking him back. "Stop, Tyson!" Grover whispered. "Can't you see it?"
Theo had to compose himself before he looked up. When he did, Theo felt physically ill. On the second floor, across the courtyard, there was a horrible monster.
The monster was sort of like Chiron, a centaur, but it had a woman's body from the waist up instead. It also had a body of a dragon instead of a horse's body- twenty feet long, black and scaly with enormous claws and a barbed tail. It's legs looked like they were tangled in Mr. D's grape vines back at camp, but at closer inspection, they were actually snakes. Around it's waist, where woman met dragon, it wore a belt of changing creatures.
