Dionysus, the son of Zeus and Semele, was unique as the only god born of a mortal. Zeus visited Semele by night, invisible to mortals yet perceived as a divine presence. Semele took pleasure in being a god's consort, unaware of his identity. As rumours spread, Hera deduced the truth. Disguised, she persuaded Semele to demand her lover reveal his true form. Upon Zeus's next visit, Semele secured a promise from him to fulfil one wish, even having him swear on the River Styx. Deeply in love, Zeus consented. Semele requested to see his divine form, which Zeus reluctantly revealed, knowing the consequences. His divine radiance incinerated Semele instantly. However, Zeus saved the unborn Dionysus, sewing him into his thigh until he was ready to be born, bestowing upon him the gift of immortality.
